Former machine operator Mark Wells, from Blackpool, has taken a step up the management ladder by gaining a nationally recognised MBA.

Mark Wells, from Blackpool, has taken a step up the management ladder by gaining a nationally recognised MBA His success comes in the wake of research which reveals that over one-third of organisations claim that their managers are not proficient

Mark joins four other managers as the first group to graduate with an MBA from the Chartered Management Institute.

He will be presented with his MBA certificate at a ceremony in London's Park Lane Hotel on Tuesday 24 February, by Gordon Page CBE, Chairman of Cobham plc and President of the Institute.

Mark works for ArvinMeritor, one of the world's largest suppliers of parts to the motor manufacturing industry.

He manages the factory in Blackpool where he began his career as a machine operator 27 years ago, and he has also been given responsibility for managing continuous improvement at ArvinMeritor plants throughout the country.

Mark's responsibilities have increased since he began studying for the MBA, and he has also enjoyed a double promotion.

He explains: "Since I started the MBA my career has developed beyond my wildest dreams.

I have done more in the last two years than in the previous 25 years.

I never thought I would be able to do an MBA but it has turned out to be the best decision I ever made." All five candidates studied for their MBAs while in full-time employment.

They completed a series of modules covering a range of management subjects, including finance, marketing and strategic management and undertook a consulting project focusing on management and leadership.

The programme can now be used as a step towards achieving the coveted professional hallmark of "Chartered Manager" status.

Mary Chapman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute, said: "Continuing professional development is an integral part of being a successful manager and the Institute's MBA programme enables busy managers to expand their knowledge and increase their impact.

The experience they have gained during the MBA programme will be a benefit to both the individuals and their organisations.

I congratulate them all on their achievement.".
