Multi-phase inserts raise productivity
by 20%
The addition of aluminium and oxygen to the conventional silicon nitride matrix has produced the hardest and most wear resistant metal cutting insert grade available, said a tooling manufacturer.
Ceratizit invests heavily in research and development and one result was the SiAlON ceramic insert launched at the EMO 2007 exhibition The addition of aluminium (Al) and oxygen (O) to the conventional silicon nitride (Si3N4) matrix has created CTI3105, the hardest and most wear resistant SiAlON available, said Ceratizit to Manufacturingtalk

One tool drills, bores, turns flat bottom holes
For even greater flexibility, further developments in an innovative multi-function tool system allows users to drill, bore, turn and drill flat bottom holes with a single tool and single insert.
The major advantage of Ceratizit's CTI3105 is its ability to retain toughness, thanks to its specially adapted micro-structure.
The long-grain structure of some phases in the ceramic composite material required for high hardness and wear resistance have been achieved through use of a special composition and innovative sintering technology developed specifically for CTI3105.
CTI3105 is particularly characterised by its chemical stability at extremely high temperatures.
This combination of high hardness, good toughness and heat resistance make it ideally suited to machining cast irons at elevated cutting data and also difficult to machine materials such as super alloys.
Ceratizit said that tests had proved that it is possible to increase cutting speed and feed rate without affecting insert reliability and the security of the machining process.
Productivity is increased by 20% when Ceratizit's SiAlON CTI 3105 is applied and, as a result of the increased wear resistance at elevated cutting data, tool life also benefits and is increased by up to 25%.
At present SiAlON CTI3105 is available as CNMX and SNMX insert designations.
