Turning aerospace specification titanium components at almost four times the normal metal removal rate is achieved using ultra-high pressure 140 bar coolant technology.

A demonstration of turning aerospace specification titanium components at almost four times the normal metal removal rate is to be staged using ultra-high pressure 140 bar (2,000 lb/in2) coolant technology by Colchester Sales and Seco Tools on the latest Tornado T8M three-axis mill/turn chucking lathe at the forthcoming Productivity Partnerships staged at the 600 Centre between 19 and 21 October 2004 The totally new design of Tornado T8M 60 degree slant bed lathe is constructed using the Colchester patented 'Duo-Stable' base foundation which has an engineered polymer concrete fill, strategic reinforcement and integral cast iron bed

This 4.5 tonne machine, which has some 25 per cent improved damping over previous models, will demonstrate its rigidity and high levels of stability by rough machining the 50mm diameter by 200mm long Ti-6Al-4V billets at 120m/min against industry norm of 40m/min and at 250m/min for finishing cuts four times the industry norm of 60m/min.

The demonstration, engineered between Colchester Sales and Seco Tools, is a prime example of the type of application at the forefront of production technology being shown at Productivity Partnerships.

The machine, fitted with 140 bar high pressure coolant system, involves joint application engineering between the two partners to provide the high level of metal removal while maintaining surface integrity, and substrate condition of the material.

In developing the demonstration, both Seco Tools and Colchester were involved with the South Bank University Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology in Southwark, London, which is one of the UK's leading specialists in research into understanding the behaviour of the high temperature alloy materials during machining.

The University has a two-axis Tornado 310 CNC lathe, a Colchester Mastiff electronic lathe and two centre lathes which are used for its trials.

The latest Tornado T8M has a 22kW spindle and a 12-station 40 VDI turret with six of the positions driven via a 3.7kW, 4,000 rev/min drive having a torque rating of 9.55Nm.

As standard, Heidenhain linear scales are used for positioning the X-axis in conjunction with the Fanuc 21i-TB flat screen control and a 360,000 full C-axis capability with disc brake spindle hold.

Within the Colchester Sales Midlands Technical Centre at the 600 Centre, the company will also be demonstrating its five-axis Tornado T6MS launched at MACH 2004 with subspindle and driven tool turret, a Combi K2 slant bed combination lathe and the MultiTurn low-cost, flat bed manual, electronic and CNC machine ideal for single component turning or repeat small batch cycles via the eight station turret and Fanuc control.
