System inspects colour coatings for
defects

Elval, one of the world's largest producers of aluminum, has integrated Cognex's SmartView surface inspection system to inspect the aluminum strip for coating defects.

Cognex, the world's leading supplier of machine vision systems, announced today that Elval, one of the world's largest producers of aluminum, has integrated Cognex's SmartView surface inspection system at their manufacturing facility in Greece Elval is using the SmartView system on a color coating line, which applies clear and color lacquers to aluminum strip used to make beverage cans

The Cognex vision system will inspect the aluminum strip for coating defects such as debris, scratches, and skips, as well as substrate defects within the aluminum.

This is the final step in the process before the aluminum is turned into cans for beer and soft drinks.

"SmartView gives manufacturers more control over the production process by providing reliable image data on a continual basis," said Markku Jaaskelainen, General Manager of Cognex's Surface Inspection Systems Division.

"By certifying product quality or alerting manufacturers when to reroute defective material, SmartView effectively reduces downgrades and rejects." SmartView is a state-of-the-art surface inspection system that is used to automatically detect, identify, and display defects in metals and other materials as they are being produced.

Cognex has sold over 100 SmartView systems since its release in February 2000, making it the most successful product launch in the history of Cognex's Surface Inspection Systems Division.

The only Greek producer of flat rolled aluminum products, Elval manufactures products ranging from thin foil for flexible packaging; coil-coated aluminum for building and construction applications; and special high magnesium alloys for shipbuilding, automotive, and other applications.
