Machine vision checks dimensions en
masse

In order to guarantee zero defects on precision automotive parts, machine vision system makes quality control checks on length, diameter, and concentric circles on 8000 parts/day.

Cognex, the world leader within industrial machine vision, ensures the faultless measurement of products manufactured by Decorec, a French company specialising in metal cutting and part enhancement in the automobile and electro- technical industry When a complex new automobile part is required, it is normally trusted to a specialist and needs to be custom made

A recent contract for such a part was awarded to Decorec, which specialises in metal parts with extremely precise requirements.

In order to guarantee zero defects on all products delivered to the client, quality control checks were required on each and every aspect of the part fabricated, namely the length, diameter, and the concentric circles.

Once the quality of the inspection application was mastered, the products also needed to sustain very high production rates.

With the extremely small dimensions (just a few millimetres) and different tolerance levels involved, a non-contact measuring system using vision was required to ensure quality control.

As this type of application had never been verified with vision before, Decorec turned to Cognex, who could provide the specific technology to cater for the precise measurements crucial for the project's success.

Following a feasibility study, Cognex recommended a solution based on high-resolution cameras and optics guaranteeing an image without any deformations.

For this complex project, Decorec wanted to integrate vision by its own means and this was done with Cognex's help in training the technical team and providing a dedicated vision engineer, as well as permanent telephone support during the system set-up.

Today the measurement machine controls more than 8,000 parts per day and on each one of these products, the Cognex vision system executes measurements on more than 20 angles or sides.

Thanks to the success of the pilot project, Decorec is now considering using the same vision integrated model for other products manufactured at their site.

About Decorec - established in 1977, and with 45 employees, Decorec achieved a turnover of EUR 3,5 million in 2003.

The company is ISO 9002 certified since 1999 and ISO/TS 16949 since 2001.

Applications in the automobile industry account for 70% of their sales figures.

They concentrate on making very small and complicated products made of machined metal, or parts that need to undergo specific treatments at very high production rates.

About Cognex - Cognex Corporation designs, develops, manufactures, and markets machine vision systems and machine vision sensors, or computers that can "see." Cognex is the world's leader in the machine vision industry, having shipped more than 200,000 vision systems, representing over $1.5 billion in cumulative revenue, since the company's founding in 1981.

Cognex's Modular Vision Systems Division, headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts, specializes in machine vision systems which are used for automating the manufacture of a wide range of discrete items and for assuring their quality.

Cognex's Surface Inspection Systems Division, headquartered in Alameda, California, specializes in machine vision systems which are used for inspecting the surfaces of products manufactured in a continuous fashion, such as metals, paper, and plastics.

In addition to its corporate headquarters in Natick, Massachusetts, Cognex also has regional offices located throughout North America, Japan, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Request a free brochure from Cognex UK ...
