A world class engineering company in North Yorkshire is providing vital components being used in complex medical surgery to bring a better quality of life to thousands.

Claro, winner of this year's prestigious GTMA World Class Award for manufacturing, has most recently provided a vital component used in the new MK4 electric hand produced by specialist Leeds manufacturer RSL Steeper ''We were asked by RSL to supply a thumb trunion - a small but vital component if the hand is to function effectively,'' said Claro's sales director Mike Lewis

''The key factors in the manufacture were quality and precision - both of which qualities Claro has been providing for years." Mr Lewis continued: "We believe our expertise cannot be bettered when it comes to manufacturing parts where high precision, complex components are required.

We are delighted that a world renowned company like RSL Steeper has the same confidence in our work." The company's latest piece of equipment, a Matsuura RA-2G twin pallet, and its fourth Axis Bridgeport were used to provide the key component for the new hand.

At RSL Steeper there is great satisfaction with the work carried out, and the company was unstinting in its praise of Claro who was able to meet the most stringent levels of quality and accuracy levels demanded.

Brent Pickles, operations manager at RSL Steeper's manufacturing facility in Leeds said Claro had been involved in the work from the prototype stage through to the finished product.

Mr Pickles commented: "These are high-precision, high quality instruments, with parts made to high tolerance levels, as they have to be a reliable replacement for adult and children's hands.

This level of quality is what we get with Claro." Claro has also been involved in essential work for a number of other specialist UK companies manufacturing components used in knee, hip and shoulder surgery.

It even produces components for critical heart valve surgery as well as surgical instrument components.

Mr Lewis commented: "At Claro we have a proven track record in producing excellent quality precision products, and this is backed up by an ISO 9000/2000 quality system.

As well as the type of component produced for RSL we also manufacture and refurbish arthroscopic tools and produce a wide range of implants and instruments for use in surgery." Claro managing director Howard Chadwick says: "We are very aware of the complex needs of the medical industry, and certainly have the capability and level of expertise needed to produce high quality precision components for medical and many other demanding industries.

We always work very closely with customers to meet their exact needs, and are delighted to be able to play a part in this vital work.".
