Coordinate metrology services are cost-effective
Providing fast, flexible and cost-effective coordinate metrology services to manufacturing sector customers throughout the UK, a new company carries out work on components up to 2m3.
Funded by Advantage West Midlands to the tune of GBP 700,000 and working closely with the Manufacturing Advisory Service - the national organisation that addresses the practical needs of British manufacturers - the Centre is kitted out with almost GBP 1 million worth of the very latest measurement equipment.
It will provide the region's manufacturing firms with a focal point for measurement expertise and services - a key underlying technology that supports all manufacturing activities.
Measurement is estimated to underpin GBP 5 billion of the UK's GDP and was identified in the DTI Innovation Report as a crucial ingredient in improving quality, reducing waste and boosting competitiveness in the manufacturing sector.

Test equipment makers save time with PXI
Test equipment manufacturers have always been looking for new solutions to remain competitive on the market and today we can surely say that only those of them who got the PXI way won.
Trevor Toman, manager of the West Midlands Manufacturing Measurement Centre, said: "Modern automated manufacturing requires accurate dimensional information.
Without it, process performance and product quality cannot be guaranteed.
Accurate and reliable information facilitates good decision making which is a critical factor in business success." He said: "There is a lack of awareness of the importance of measurement.
Very few people in the manufacturing industry know how to measure rigorously and accurately, and those that do tend to struggle to keep in touch with the latest advances in technology and equipment.
The Centre will start to reverse this trend by acting as a 'one-stop-shop' for measurement expertise.
It will help businesses select and trial equipment, put them in touch with vendors, and allow them to enrol onto a series of accredited measurement training programmes set up by the DTI and the National Physical Laboratory and run by Coventry University." The launch event will feature guest speakers from the DTI, the National Physical Laboratory, the Manufacturing Advisory Service and the High Performance Engineering Group.
They will deliver a series of briefings on topics ranging from how measurement can increase your profit through to accredited training courses and grants.
A tour of the facilities, measurement demonstrations and opportunities to try the equipment will also be available.
