Automotive test and assembly equipment specialists Cirrus Technologies have passed their assessment - with flying colours and at the first attempt - for BS EN ISO 14001.

Automotive test and assembly equipment specialists Cirrus Technologies of Heming Road, Washford, Redditch, have passed their assessment - with flying colours and at the first attempt - for the international standard for environmental management systems, BS EN ISO 14001 The company fulfilled the preparatory training programme in conjunction with the European Social Fund (ESF) Project facilitated by a partnership of Land Rover and Coventry City Council

Brian Tozer, an environmental consultant from the ESF project based at Land Rover in Solihull, provided free ISO 14001 training and advice.

Assessment and certification were executed by the national certification body NQA (National Quality Assurance), based at Dunstable, Bedfordshire.

Consisting of ten structured steps up to implementation, the project was steered in-house by Mr David Lengden, Total Quality Manager.

He had joined Cirrus Technologies as an electronics and electrical engineer in 1984 and managed the previous programme that culminated in their achievement of the ISO 9001 Standard for process quality systems in 1993.

The ISO 14001 standard provides a robust framework for savings in raw material costs, waste disposal costs and energy bills.

Land Rover, along with most other leading motor manufacturers, has achieved certification to this standard for all of its UK sites and is now expecting its first-tier suppliers to follow suit: Cirrus are the second this year to acquire ISO 14001 via the ESF Project at Land Rover.

The objective of the ESF project is to train up automotive supply companies in the West Midlands to improve their environmental performance and competitiveness.

Land Rover fully endorses the programme and the partnership with Coventry City Council, as it supports their environmental strategy and goals.

Numerous practical illustrations of environmental improvements and cost savings can be observed at Cirrus Technologies, first written down as procedures to instruct employees and then continuously monitored by internal audit.

You see the recycling of waste metals, board, paper and oil through registered recycling companies and of used printer and toner cartridges, distributed by Cirrus to local charities.

There is the discipline of energy saving by switching off equipment not in actual use.

What is more, a range of environmental emergency strategies are in place for, say, any oil or chemical spillage.

With a GBP 10m annual turnover and 100 employees, independent UK plantmakers Cirrus Technologies offer four core engineering competencies for the vehicle assembly line and laboratory - electrical test systems; rolling roads including dynamometers; wheel and tyre assembly machines; and special-purpose automotive test and assembly systems.

Among their top customers are Land Rover, Jaguar, MG Rover, BMW, General Motors, Delphi, Nissan, Caterpillar, Saab, Pirelli, DaimlerChrysler and Lotus.
