Calorimeter for remote monitoring of
steam traps

ARI-Armaturen has announced a calorimetric test system, CONA-Control, for the constant remote monitoring of steam traps allowing the early detection of malfunctions.

The CONA-Control System introduced by ARI-Armaturen, leader in the manufacture and supply of process valves, is a calorimetric test system for the constant remote monitoring of steam traps The system can individually test thousands of steam traps in a matter of seconds, warning of malfunctions almost immediately

The steadily rising cost of energy, coupled with mounting economic and environmental pressures, mean that technologies to optimise energy utilisation are in considerable demand.

Early detection of malfunctions is vital within steam traps as leakages result in significant energy loss and blockages result in impaired plant performance and output leading to increased operational costs.

The CONA-Control unique test technology identifies and reports faults immediately because the steam traps are monitored individually and continuously, therefore minimising energy losses from the plant.

Unlike other systems on the market CONA-Control does not simply measure the conductivity of the condensate, but also measures the temperature difference using a patented calorimetric sensing system, highlighting a steam trap malfunction (leakage or blockage) immediately and generating an error report.

By detecting clogged steam traps that are no longer able to drain off condensate it allows them to be exchanged immediately, minimising or even eliminating downtime.

Such faults could potentially bring an entire plant to a stand still, but can now be identified and corrected promptly, the moment they occur using the new ARI-Armaturen system.

A flexible system, it can be interfaced over an ASI bus so that reports can be requested from workstations around the plant, or even off-site.

ARI-Armaturen's unique calorimetric sensing system overcomes the shortcomings of: * Conductivity probes where unwanted deposits (e.g magnetite) in the condensate can give spurious signals.

* Ultrasonic systems where extraneous noise can confuse results.

The advanced features of the CONA-Control system also recognise when a plant is off-line and does not log the event as a 'malfunction', thus simplifying the print-out passed to the maintenance department for repair/replacement.

This gives the additional benefits of saving plant down-time, maintenance personnel time and the costs of replacement steam traps and spares.

CONA-Control comprises a sensor, which is flanged either directly in the steam trap or as a separate sensor chamber, and one amplifier with local display per sensor.

The system further extends ARI-Armaturen's specialist range and underpins the company's philosophy of being a one-stop-shop for valves, controls and pipeline equipment. Request a free brochure from ARI Armaturen (UK) ...
