They mean that if you store oil on your premises, you must comply with a new set of rules that focus on safeguarding people and the environment." He adds that companies storing oils near rivers, inland freshwaters, coastal waters, wells or boreholes must be compliant with new rules by September 1st 2003.
The one-day audit is carried out by qualified Castrol professionals for a nominal charge, which includes a gap analysis report recommending fully costed solutions to any problems identified.

The cost of the audit is usually refunded if recommendations are actioned through Castrol.
Areas covered by the audit include all tanks and containers with a capacity of more than 200 litres, but as Neil Pearson points out there are many other implications to be considered.
Fixed tanks not fitted with a leakage detection device, and having pipes with mechanical joints, must now be tested regularly to check for leaks.
Inspection records should be kept so that if there is a leak, the authorities can confirm that companies have been monitoring their storage facilities correctly.
Spillage risk assessments should be undertaken and contingency plans put in place, so that employees know what they need to do should spills occur.
Any water that needs to be removed from the bund is now classed as 'special waste' and must be properly stored, and then disposed of every six months in an authorised manner.
And consignment notes for waste disposal must be available for official inspection.
To assist with on-going compliance Castrol offers a schedule of regular audits and inspections to provide records of compliance for possible inspection by regulatory bodies.Castrol is also developing further products and services to help its customers meet their HSE responsibilities.
They should be available later this year.
