Powertrain award win for environmental
excellence

Because a synthetic cutting fluid established an environmental advantage against competitors, a gearbox manufacturer has changed over to the supplier for all its fluid management needs.
Turner Powertrain, which manufactures transmission units for off-road applications in the building and agricultural industries, submitted a project designed to achieve a significant improvement in recycling and an ultimate aim of zero land-fill waste by 2010.
To achieve the demanding targets set for the project the company formed an 'Environmental Team' that included Turner Powertrain employees; Castrol, the site's long-term supplier of fluid management services; and Waste Efficiency , a specialist waste management company that was the chosen partner to manage all solid waste leaving the site.
The project was run by Bob Holt, Turner Powertrain's Facilities Manager, who explained that when the project began in July 2004 the site was recycling between 20% and 25% of its waste.
Since the project began in 2004, with Castrol operating an economiser to recycle water based cutting fluids and a centrifuge for neat oils, the volume of fluids used has been reduced dramatically.
At the same time, Waste Efficiency concentrated on the solid wastes especially recycling wood, cardboard and plastic.
To prepare for a regular annual audit by Caterpillar's Corporate Audit and Compliance Division, Bob Holt produced a booklet outlining the Environmental Team's achievements in maintaining recycling levels of over 80%, and hitting a peak of 91% in August 2005.
Members of the audit team were so impressed that they suggested adding more detail to the report and submitting it for an Environmental Excellence Award.
Summing up, Bob Holt says that thanks to the input from Castrol and Waste Efficiency the Silver Award has provided a real boost for the project.
"But we're not complacent," He says: "We are aiming for gold or platinum by 2010!".
