Cogne UK purchased a Combilift LPG powered multi-directional forklift to cope with the increased volume of stock at their central warehousing and distribution centre in Sheffield.

Leading UK stainless steel bar stockholder, Cogne UK, bought a Combilift LPG powered multi-directional forklift to cope with the increased volume of stock they are now handling at their central warehousing and distribution centre in Sheffield Cogne's recent substantial growth in business has resulted in a much busier schedule for their dedicated fleet of delivery trucks as well as the necessity to use every available inch of space in their storage facilities

Recognising the need for a revised approach to materials handling, Cogne revived longstanding business connections with South Yorkshire based materials handling specialists and newly appointed Combilift dealership Ability Handling, who recommended replacing their previous trucks with one single Combilift 4-way all-wheel drive forklift.

Unlike an electric truck, it operates outside in all weather conditions to ensure reliable loading and offloading of materials.

Once inside the warehouse it is far more manoeuvrable than a sideloader, handling loads of extreme length in aisles as narrow as 2.5m.

This has enabled Cogne to reduce the width of the aisles, install a guide roller system and consequently add extra racking to achieve additional space for the 2,000 tonnes of stainless steel bars and sections stored.

Operations Manager at Cogne, Alan Spalton, is particularly impressed by the performance of the Combilift, which "has more than lived up to its expectations".

He explains: "The Combilift moves stock more quickly, can keep pace with deliveries and has enabled us to speed up operations.

It can also deal with all our various products, including 6 metre lengths weighing up to 4 tonnes, whereas our old trucks were 'choosy` and could each only cope with some of our range".

The flexibility not only of the trucks themselves but also of the Irish manufacturers of the Combilift was demonstrated when tackling the issue of the very short cantilever racking arms, installed to reduce the overall depth of the shelving and to avoid wasting space.

After consultation with Ability Handling and the Combilift engineers, a customised solution was devised to avoid the potential risk of damage to Cogne's very valuable stock by forks protruding through the centre of the racking.

A restrictive hydraulic reach was fitted, which, while limiting the extent of fork protrusion within the racks, still allows fully effective offloading from the trucks.

A particular strength of the Combilift operation and their dealerships is their flexible outlook towards customer needs and their ability to tailor trucks to individual requirements, which Alan Spalton sees as "a major customer benefit".

The design and construction of the Combilift multi-directional forklifts make them robust, reliable and easy to maintain.

Depending on the particular application, they are available with lift capacities ranging from 2.5 to 9 tonnes, powered either by diesel or LPG and can be fitted with a variety of attachments such as fork positioners or four-fork attachments to ease the load for customers handling long loads in confined spaces.
