Right-angle machining heads stored in
ATC magazine
Two right-angle heads - one for milling-intensive work and the other for drilling and tapping - can be exchanged automatically from a machining centre's tool magazine.
Following the acquisition by Coventry Toolholders of gear-driven tooling manufacturer, Centreline, from the Administrators last year, two right-angle heads have been introduced by the newly formed company, CTL Centreline Designated RAM-160 and RAD-160, the former is for milling-intensive applications while the other is intended for drilling and tapping operations, although it is capable of light milling as well

Mill/turn investment halves toolholder lead times
Users of high-speed machining may be interested to learn that Coventry Toolholders is halving the lead-time from order to delivery for its flange- and taper-contact HSK toolholders.
The heads are designed for medium duty applications on all makes of 40 taper machining centre and may be exchanged automatically from the machines tool magazine by the automatic tool changer (ATC).
Alternative drive tapers such as 30, 50 and HSK are also available.
Sitting between the company's -120 and -225 models, the RAD-160 head has an ER25 collet chuck while its milling counterpart uses 20-taper toolholding with manual drawbar, tool shank diameter being up to 16mm.
Maximum spindle/cutter speed is 3,500 rev/min as standard, 7,000 rev/min in high-speed version, speed ratio being 1:1.
Weight of the heads is 6.5kg and they are delivered as sealed, maintenance-free units.
A double-spindle right-angle head based on the RAD-160 is a standard catalogue item, allowing both sides of prismatic components to be machined in the same cycle without having to reposition the tool in the spindle or index a rotary table or fixture.
Available also from the catalogue are three further versions of the same head extended in reach from 160mm to 200mm, 240mm and 280mm, the figures denoting the distance from the gauge line of the taper to the centreline of the cutter.
Previously, all such units would have been specials and subject to longer delivery and a cost premium.
In the area of fixed-angle heads other than the above 90 deg tooling, angles of 60, 45 and 30 deg are standard items available at the same price as the right angle heads.
CTL Centreline also manufactures an extensive range of special and adjustable angle heads.
All can significantly reduce capital investment in a machining centre by eliminating the need for a fourth or fifth axis.
