Rotating and swivelling head boosts VMCs
to 5-axis
Users of 3-axis CNC vertical machining centres can now upgrade to full 5-axis interpolative metalcutting with the addition of a rotating and swivelling, motorised angle head.
Users of 3-axis CNC vertical machining centres can now upgrade to full 5-axis interpolative metalcutting with the addition of a new, rotating and swivelling, motorised angle head from CTL-Centreline, Coventry, UK Called Centremax, the head has 360-degree continuous rotary movement and ñ 90-degree adjustment of the tool angle, both of which are programmable, giving considerable versatility of machining options and eliminating the need for a rotary table and indexing head

Heavy-duty head mills tough materials

Right-angle machining heads stored in ATC magazine
Two right-angle heads - one for milling-intensive work and the other for drilling and tapping - can be exchanged automatically from a machining centre's tool magazine.
Whilst not necessarily less expensive than the latter option, the head has the advantage of only marginally reducing the machining envelope, unlike a compound table which significantly restricts working volume.
Moreover, the head can be fitted on bridge-type and travelling-column machines where it is not practical to fit rotary tables.
CTL-Centreline has for many years manufactured fixed-angle heads as well as manually adjusted universal angle heads, with or without the facility to be automatically exchanged between spindle and tool magazine.
Customers have frequently asked for fully programmable versions of the universal heads, which prompted Centreline to develop the numerically controlled Centremax, the company's first head with powered movement.
Weighing 68kg and measuring 320mm high by 215mm diameter, the head is available in 40 and 50 taper versions and can be retrofitted to a machining centre in 20 to 30 minutes, without any modification to the machine.
Tool holding is quick change HSK40 with a maximum cutter diameter of 20mm.
Recommended spindle speed is within the range 100 to 5000 rpm.
