Automotive aluminium supplier gains QA
certificate

Aluminium extrusions business claims to be one of the first European automotive suppliers to acquire certification to the new ISO/TS 16949:2002 quality management system.

Corus' aluminium extrusions business is one of the first European automotive suppliers to acquire certification to the new ISO/TS 16949:2002 quality management system, which the business has set up as an intranet service that can be used by all employees The business, which forms part of the Corus manufacturing plant at Duffel in Belgium, produces high quality aluminium profiles, rods, bars and tubes for the global automotive and aerospace industries

ISO/TS 16949:2002 is considered to be a future standard for the automotive sector and a starting point in the harmonisation and globalisation of designer specified standards.

Until recently every car manufacturer focused on their own standards (QS900, VDA6.1, EAQF, etc).

"As a result, Corus Aluminium Extrusions Duffel had to spend 35 man-days per year on external and second party audits," says sales and marketing director Marcel Imbrecht.

"This is a heavy burden for a small organisation generating 65 per cent of its sales in the automotive sector." The new standard builds on the international ISO 9001 standard, which was developed for the efficient management of an organisation based on the recognition and understanding of its main processes.

ISO/TS 16949:2000 goes a step further with statistical performance indicators for all processes, thereby providing management with an additional and practical tool for continuously improving the entire organisation.

By making the new quality management system electronically accessible throughout the shop floor, the feedback of process information is increased considerably.

For ease of use, the layout and structure of the new intranet-based system is similar to a regular website, and authorised users can use it to look for procedures and instructions.

"This measure of empowerment increases the involvement and motivation of all employees to further contribute ideas for improvement," says Imbrecht. Request a free brochure from Corus Group (Automotive) ...
