Corus has been awarded a contract by Alvis Vickers to supply flat-pack kits of complex armour steel profiles for the manufacture of 66 armoured engineer vehicles for the Ministry of Defence.

Corus has been awarded a contract by Alvis Vickers to supply flat-pack kits of complex armour steel profiles for the manufacture of 66 armoured engineer vehicles for the Ministry of Defence This consists of 33 Trojan and 33 Titan vehicles

The kits for the armoured vehicles are being manufactured at Corus's specialist service centres at Bellshill in Scotland and Leeds, which are equipped with sophisticated laser, plasma and oxy-gas profiling facilities.

Corus will supply three complete kits each month in flat-pack form to Alvis Vickers in Newcastle for assembly.

Each kit consists of all the armour steel profiles required for a complete vehicle-build.

These profiles are manufactured from several specifications and gauges of armour steel and are either laser, plasma or gas cut depending upon the thickness of the material.

Additionally, they are laser-etched with unique numbers that correspond to the original design drawings and the component's place in the build sequence.

These vehicles represent the first armoured engineer vehicles to be specifically designed for their role, rather than adapted from a battle tank chassis.

Trojan is a complex obstacle breacher, which can be fitted with a mineplough or dozer blade, whilst Titan is the fastest bridgelayer in the world with the capability of launching a 26m bridge in two minutes.

The prototypes, which were built using Corus kits, were unveiled in February 2003 and represented one of the fastest peacetime design and build programmes recorded.

This was achieved by employing continuous SMART acquisition practices and co-operative working between everyone involved from Corus, industry and the Defence Procurement Agency.

Critically, these practices underpin the main production programme and will ensure that deliveries of the vehicles to the MoD can begin on schedule in 2005.

John Backhouse, Special Products Commercial Manager at Corus, said: 'We are very pleased to have been awarded this contract by Alvis Vickers, which will see Corus play a key role in the production of these next generation armoured vehicles. The kits incorporate the latest design features and materials, and are manufactured using sophisticated processing technologies to ensure a fast, efficient and error-free build and, ultimately, a vehicle that can perform to the highest standards in the most demanding situations.'.
