Software decreases 'time-to-market'
DELMIA'S Process Engineering is a radically different manufacturing engineering portfolio of modules utilising the most current methodologies within an integrated IT environment.
The team claimed the fastest combined roadster times, with the Type 119B finishing over 1.3 seconds ahead of its nearest open-cockpit rival, and also picked up the trophy for Best Presented Roadster Weighing less than 50 kg, this year's Type 119c 'Streamliner' featuring an enclosed cockpit has a carbon fibre monocoque and utilises titanium parts used in Formula 1 racing.
This minimal weight allows the strategic positioning of ballast to optimise the weight distribution inside the soapbox.
The wheel spokes are enclosed in sleek carbon fibre covers and the design was fine-tuned in wind-tunnel tests, giving it an efficient aerodynamic profile.
It should reach speeds of around 60mph down the Goodwood Hill, powered by nothing other than the force of gravity.
The concept was designed with Dassault Systemes' CATIA CAD software.
Lotus recently made a significant investment in Delmia digital manufacturing software.
When Delmia is used in conjunction with CATIA, an integrated virtual design and manufacturing environment is created to optimise production planning and reduce time-to-market.
The six-member team behind this year's entry has had access to the full range of Lotus' facilities from Lotus Design through to the body and chassis engineering group.
Simon Wood, engineering director explains, "This project has been a valuable exercise.
The soapbox programme has provided these graduates with an extremely rewarding experience, managing their own project budget and timing plans, and they learn an enormous amount very quickly.
The project also forms part of our IMechE-accredited Graduate Training Scheme." In just a decade, the Goodwood Festival of Speed has established itself as Europe's premier Historic Motorsports event.
The Festival centres on a one-mile hill course along the narrow road that loops past Goodwood House.
The event is held in June at Goodwood House, near Chichester, West Sussex, about one mile north of the Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit.
