Warehouse crane has variable speeds in all axes

A Demag Cranes and Components product story

An automated crane system, designed to move and stack ISO steel containers for a warehouse, features inverter controls, providing variable speeds for motion in all directions.

Materials handling specialist, Demag Cranes and Components, has completed the installation of an automated ContainerMaster crane system for Baxter Moving Excellence.

Baxter is a market leader in the international removals and storage sector and has recently opened a new facility in Carlisle.

Over half of the new 3100m2 warehouse is dedicated to storage within 20 ft and 25 ft ISO steel containers.

The containers can be stacked up to six high to accommodate 460 units.

To facilitate the movement of the ISO containers, Baxter specified a Demag ContainerMaster fully automated crane system, developed specifically for the application.

Demag's material handling solution comprises a 14 tonne SWL overhead crane, with a four wheel crab equipped with two Demag wire rope hoists, each rated at 8 tonne SWL.

The system features inverter controls, providing variable speeds for motion in all directions.

The crane is inherently safe, with fail safe locking mechanisms and feedback to the crane, to prevent lifting, if the container is not properly located within the container grab.

A particular feature of the handling system, developed for Baxter, is its ability to move containers from the marshalling area to a predetermined storage location and memorise its position for retrieval.

Should the container be relocated during its period of storage, the system's computer is automatically updated.

When the container is to be despatched, the operator keys in the container number and the "intelligent" crane will automatically travel to the appropriate location for retrieval.

For total inventory control, the computer holds a list of the container's contents and the name and contact details of the owner of the goods, providing data for rental invoicing.

Sales Director, Claire Baxter Wilkinson, believes that by embracing ISO container storage, Baxter is meeting the demands of its clients: "The Demag handling system is allowing us to move containers quickly and efficiently.

We are already considering investment in a second container handling line at our Carlisle warehouse".
