Materials handling specialist, Demag Cranes and Components, has installed six of its Steelmaster Cranes at ASD metal services' Leeds site, as part of GBP 5.5m investment in new technology ASD metal services is one of the UK's largest stockholders and processors of multi-metals

Its Leeds site is a hub for the processing and distribution of structural and general steels, with typical stock levels of over 16,000 tonnes/1,000 lines, supporting company's national distribution network of 26 regional outlets.

Critical to steel processing at the Leeds site is the shot blasting, painting and sawing to length of raw bars up to 22m in length.

The raw steel bars are loaded onto the process line by crane and manoeuvred by the system at each stage of the process, before being offloaded from the line for despatch.

To increase productivity and improve efficiency in this section, to meet increased customer demand, ASD metal services' operations team worked closely with Demag engineers to develop the new process line, which is one of the most advanced in the world.

Demag has installed six 30m span 7.5 tonne + 7.5 tonne twin crab cranes, each equipped with four fully interchangeable section handling magnets.

All of the cranes feature an anti pendular reeving system to eliminate load sway and promote positioning accuracy.

Further lifting precision is ensured by AC frequency inverters, providing smooth and infinite control of movement.

The cranes have a travel speed of up to 125m per minute and hoisting speeds of up to 20m per minute, with exceptional acceleration and deceleration characteristics.

The speed and accuracy of the new Demag cranes has resulted in a 25% increase in duty, speeding up the process cycle and improving lead times.

ASD is now able to process over 240 tonnes per day and as a result offers a 48 hour turnaround on processed structural steel products.

Safety was a major factor in the development of the steel handling system.

All aspects of crane movement, lifting and lowering are remotely controlled, allowing operators to be excluded from the process area, thus eliminating the possibility of accident or injury through contact with the material during its transportation, sorting and stacking.

ASD metal services' Group Operations manager, David Cox, stated that the system is the first of its type in the UK steel sector, adding: "This is an awesome system.

We asked Demag to produce a solution offering unparalleled speed and accuracy of movement; they have met and exceeded our expectations.".
