In spite of the widespread use of CNC machine tools, some users are not machining out loose burrs, at best they are being made smaller, but customers expect zero burrs.

Deburring Centre, the thermal deburring specialists, have noticed a huge increase in requests for their free sampling over the last two years, despite state-of-the-art CNC machines producing more highly engineered components Potentially loose burrs are not being machined out, at best they are just made smaller

Two things, which are at either end of the spectrum, seem to be happening and causing this upsurge.

1 - Client expectations have increased and they now expect even finer burrs and contaminants, now measured in microns, to be removed.

2 - Awkward to reach burrs are still being manually removed by wiggling drills and pieces of wire causing damage and inconsistencies.

CNC manufacturing times are now measured in seconds and minutes but deburring is still being measured in minutes and sometimes hours with huge cost implications.

Production 'bottlenecks' now reside in the deburring/finishing departments.

"We are being offered a huge range of shapes, sizes, complexity and material for sampling.

Components that we wouldn't have considered in the past we are now successfully trialing," said managing director Paddy House.

"We would encourage anyone with deburring 'issues' to contact us.

Trials are normally returned within a couple of days." Thermal deburring is the only process that guarantees the removal of all burrs.

No matter how small.
