Using up-to-date hot runner systems a mould maker produced a 12-impression plastics mould tool to operate some 30% faster than an existing one with an antiquated feed system.

Following increased use of DMS-Diemould hot runners over the past three years, Hertfordshire-based plastics injection toolmaker and mould shop, Cybertools, now won't use anyone else In the past year, two large projects for a key customer have confirmed the company's commitment to DMS

At the tender age of 23, having recently finished his apprenticeship, Paul Brown took the bold step of launching his own company.

"I was fed up and I had nothing to lose," he declared.

That was eight years ago.

Today, his company, Cybertools, is a successful toolmaker and plastics injection mould shop employing five full-time people and a number of temporary staff.

"The idea is to target customers who don't have much industry experience but have a good idea for a product," explained Brown.

"We offer a full service including design, tooling and moulding.

This has allowed us to develop a niche and help negate the competitive threat from the Far East." It's a policy that is paying dividends for Cybertools.

A year ago it moved to a new 5000ft2 facility, some three times bigger than its previous home, from where the company now runs 24/7 operations.

Among the many markets served by the company are: automotive (switch assemblies for airbags, seat buckles, parts for sensors): scientific/medical (water testing parts, oxygen bottle valves); and brewing (flow valves, pump components).

For the majority of its projects, Cybertools now opts to use hot runners supplied by injection mould tool specialist, DMS.

"When I did my apprenticeship I became familiar with DMS-Diemould and one of its German competitors," said Brown.

"And, when I launched Cybertools, I discovered the benefits of the good prices and swift deliveries they offered - next day in many instances".

"Plus everyone in our industry knows DMS-Diemould." Over the past few years DMS-Diemould has been steadily growing another side to its business - hot runner nozzles and complete hot top solutions.

In line with this, Cybertools has slowly been increasing its usage of these systems.

Last year the company undertook its biggest ever tool, for a customer that operated a contract to supply plastic balloon sticks to a multi-national fast food giant.

The tool (one of three) had been operating for five years and was both worn (from supplying one million parts a year) and sporting an antiquated feed system.

The customer wanted a new 12-impression tool capable of reducing the current cycle time of 15s to sub 10s.

"It was a huge project for us but, in partnership with DMS-Diemould, we managed to get the price right," he explained.

"Our designers worked with Paul Turner at DMS-Diemould to create a hot runner system that would make the tool operate some 30% faster than the one it was replacing." Offering a cycle time of 8-9s, Cybertools' customer is delighted with the end result.

The tool has now been running for eight months, with payback expected before 12 months' operation has elapsed.

It is thought the customer will replace its two other tools next year.

In the meantime, the same client has used Cybertools to supply an eight-impression tool that produces aquarium and pond 'bioballs', which are used for used to aid colonisation by nitrifying bacteria in a biological filtration system.

Again the tool used a hot runner supplied by DMS-Diemould.

Such has been the success of the project that Cybertools is now quoting for a smaller version.

"I can't fault DMS-Diemould," concluded Brown.

"The service they provide is first class, even for 'specials.

Our partnership has worked out really well - our customers are happy, we are happy, and now we won't use anyone else.".
