Aware of the rapid advances in machining technology, Warwick Manufacturing Group has purchased a range of high specification, multi-axis CNC machine tools from DMG UK.

Aware of the rapid advances in machining technology as well as increasingly complex future research requirements, Warwick Manufacturing Group has opted to purchase a range of high specification, multi-axis CNC machine tools from DMG UK WMG is one of Europe's leading manufacturing groups

Its mission is to improve competitiveness through the application of innovation, new technologies and skills deployment, bringing academic rigor to industrial and organisational practice.

WMG is a division within the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick, and its programmes aim to develop students to face up to the challenges of the modern industry and develop their capability to manage engineering manufacturing companies.

With this in mind, the correct selection of a suitable machine tool partner was crucial, as Roger Bull of WMG confirmed: "We considered numerous manufacturers of machine tools but selected DMG because the company's range of machine tools suited our requirements.

The 5-axis machines were considered to be especially superior in configuration and were thought to be ideal for our research, including work on medical and automotive projects." The machines acquired by WMG were: a DMU100T 5-axis universal machining centre; a DMU50evo five-axis machining centre for simultaneous machining across five axes; a DMU60 monoBLOCK high speed milling machine, a CTX410 universal CNC lathe and an NEF320 universal CNC lathe.

The group has also taken a DMC63V vertical machining centre on loan from DMG UK amongst others.

"On a daily basis, students test out their programs and manufacture their projects using these machines," explained Bull.

"The machines support projects from undergraduates to PhDs, working from basics to advanced machining strategies.

Projects range from robot footballer production and single-seat racing car parts manufacture to the development of tool coatings and material testing.

Most of the machines are also used regularly by technicians and sometimes by engineering doctorate students for the purpose of research." The DMG machines were installed just over 12 months ago at WMG's International Manufacturing Centre at Warwick University, which has been established specifically for research into the internal drivers of competitiveness, including design and innovation, strategy and operations management, robotics and automation, and logistics.

The IMC provides a focus for research with supply chains and SME partnerships.

WMG has long-term relationships with many of Britain's most successful companies from Land Rover to BAE Systems, from AstraZeneca to Rolls-Royce.

"The DMG machines provide far greater 5-axis machining capability," concluded Bull.

"Machining capacity has also been gained along with a reduction in setting times.

One of the best features of the machine tools is that they are easily programmed and the operator can see the process clearly.

The commonality of the machine control enables operators to change from one machine to another with ease.

Overall we are extremely impressed with the quality, aesthetics, ergonomics and capability of the DMG machines.".
