CNC miller-drillers cut 20% off machining times
With the highly productive DMU 50 / 70 eVolution, DMG has added a new dimension to universal milling and drilling machines designed to save up to 20% on machining times.
DMG told Manufacturingtalk at EMO that users can now choose from a continuous programme of machines with axis travels/work areas starting from 600 x 700 x 600mm (0.25m3) for the new 'small' machines up to 1600 x 1250 x 1000mm (2m3) in the '160 class'.
The DMU 60 P duoBLOCK and the DMC 60 U duoBLOCK Machines are also part of a group of 14 high-tech machines at the EMO booth presented by Gildemeister to trade show visitors in the company's 'New Design' section.
Due to the design's convincing interplay of functionality, ergonomics and style, it will arguably become a trendsetter for future design developments that will reach far beyond the sector of machine tools, said Gildemeister.

* Machine structure - The duoBLOCK consists of features such as a bed and a rear wall, as well as an X-slide in a dual track design, all in a sturdy, cast-iron construction.
The frame ensures excellent rigidity for a better transfer of the fast acceleration and deceleration forces to the workpiece.
This in turn leads to high precision and excellent surface quality.
In addition, the cast-iron materials improve the repeat accuracy of the machines, providing long-term value as a return on the original investment.
The DMU 60 P duoBLOCK and DMC 60 U duoBLOCK with their fast pallet changers offer a sturdy machine bed and a 3-point support, which results in lowering the structural demands on the foundation on which the machine is set up (especially beneficial in older plants for keeping pre-installation costs low).
With the duoBLOCK and its dual X-slide as a starting point, customers can upgrade their machines with a wide array of expansion options in the form of a modular toolbox.
A customer can choose, as a starting point, between a hydraulically adjustable H/V-head on the standard machine and a CNC-controlled B-axis for 5-axis simultaneous machining.
There are no fewer than four spindle integration options.
An SK 40 motor spindle with 12,000 rev/min is available with 28kW and 121Nm (40% duty cycle), as well as three additional motor spindles with 18,000 rev/min (SK 40), 24,000 rev/min (HSK-A63), and 30,000 rev/min (HSK-E 50).
But the impressive evolution in comparison to the former hi-dyn Series is visible not only in the replacement of the travelling column.
The machines are in every respect more powerful than their predecessors, without a reduction in work area size or the maximum workpiece load of 600kg.
This is evidenced, for example, by the 20% increase in rapid traverse speed to the current 60m/min, as well as increased acceleration up to 6m/s2 and chip-to-chip times of now only 4.2s, equivalent to an increase of no less than 35%.
Particularly with regard to the chip-to-chip times, the advantages of the vertical chain magazine become clear, with a fast tool changer that can be equipped with 60, 120 or even 180 tools, depending on the user's requirements for added flexibility.
Last, but not least, the available control technology with its unique 5-axis software reflects more than 20 years of Deckel Maho development in the 5-axis sector.
'Collision Monitoring', a function of the Heidenhain iTNC 530 control, is already available in the standard version and provides powerful process monitoring in real-time, leading to optimal utilisation of the work area.
3D-quickSet is used for the control and adjustment of axis precision and of axis kinematics at the press of a button, while ATC, also at the press of a button, provides easy-to-use tuning of the feed drives for the reduction of machining times and improved quality.
HPC (Head Precision Control) and TPC (Table Precision Control) handle the detection and correction of head and table pivot point misalignment, while TCPM provides automatic Tool Centre Point Management.
Finally, 3D-temperature compensation ensures an altogether perfect machining result.
* 'New Design' - the goal of the "New Design", from DMG's point of view, is a novel appearance that makes the unmistakable quality of the brand evident.
To this end, all machines will share common brand-specific design elements.
These include a high-quality off-white finish with touches of shiny black, as well as the DMG LIGHTline, which spans the entire length of the machine in the area adjacent to the door, signalling the operational status of the machine in different colours instead of a conventional indicator lamp.
* Better visibility to work area - overall, the driving force behind the development of the new design was added customer value.
'New Design' also offers better visibility into the work area, leading to greater transparency of the machining process, due to a 40% enlargement of the safety-glass viewing windows (increase in window-size up to 80% in some cases).
Whereas other manufacturers increasingly appear to want to close off the machining process behind ever larger amounts of sheet metal, the chip-removal process on DMG high-tech machines can once again be immediately experienced by the operator.
The experience of the machining process leads to greater identification with what occurs in the work area, and leads to improved quality.
* Control system - the new DMG ERGOline control has an enormous 19in screen, which looks more like a high-end flat screen than a machine control.
It integrates the advantages of the former DMG ControlPanel and the DMG SlimLinePanel into a unified high-tech operator panel.
The DMG ERGOline control can be positioned on a cantilever either on the right or the left side of the work area, depending on the machine series.
In every case, the larger screen not only ensures more comfortable read-off, but provides for additional DMG SOFTkeys and status displays to be integrated into the viewing window, which leads to a safer and more relaxed working environment, which also leads to more efficient operation overall.
This is all the more the case because the new ERGOline control also contains a pivot device which allows for optimal ergonomic adjustment of both the screen and operator panel to individual requirements.
This is also true, by the way, for the optional integrated seat for the machine operator, as well as the optional mouse pad, including a blueprint stand.
With DMG SOFTkeys, DMG further increases operator comfort.
The user can assign customisable soft keys for frequently used operational sequences or commonly selected screen content.
* Smartkey locking off system - the overall visual appeal and functionality of the new DMG ERGOline control gives the term 'emotional intelligence' new meaning, said Gildemeister.
This will became clear to all EMO visitors, when they tried to find the conventional lock for the selection of the machine-operating mode.
DMG has replaced the common key cabinet with a new DMG SMARTkey system - unique in the machine tool industry.
In its appearance, the intelligent DMG SMARTkey looks a little like a high-end MP3 player, but while it does not store music files, it offers a much wider range of options than simply selecting the operating mode.
To name only two examples, it offers personalized user authorization with customizable access rights and individualized preparation of the control.
General features of the DMU 60 P duoBLOCK and DMC 60 U duoBLOCK machining centres include the following.
* Added value of the duoBLOCK design now also in the 600 size: excellent in precision, rigidity, power and ergonomics.
