Competitively priced CNC lathes and vertical machining centres start at a price under GBP 40,000 with quality components from lSauter for turrets and CNCs from Siemens and Fanuc.

Ath the UK's MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition the German Gildemeister Group will introduce its Ecoline range of competitively priced machine tools to the UK CNC lathes and vertical machining centres (VMC) are based upon European design with a high specification coupled with economy of scale production

Said Tim Hatley, managing director of DMG (UK) based in Luton: "The introduction of the 'Eco' brand, in the CTX 310 and 510 ECO lathes and the DMC 635V and 1035V ECO vertical machining centres at a price starting at under GBP 40,000, is aimed to attract a totally new market segment for the company.

It will also create a viable alternative to the multitude of cheap machine tool offers currently available at the lower end of the market".

Hatley said that customers will find a new 'benchmark', between DMG products and the service support available, that is comparable in price but far superior in technology, specification and performance.

The launch of the Ecoline brand will be followed by progressive introductions of competitively priced CTX universal lathes and DMC VMCs as production increases at the Gildemeister factories in Shanghai, China.

The Shanghai plant is scheduled to build 600 Eco machine tools during 2008, while the Polish DMG Famot plant will build a further 330 machines.

Gildemeister said that it is not compromising its fitted equipment supply but using its purchase power, German management for production, quality control and logistics to ensure top quality components are sourced.

For example, Sauter will supply turrets and Siemens and Fanuc the CNCs.

The machines will be offered with 3D graphical intuitive shopfloor programming software.

The DMG plant in Shanghai covers a factory area of 4,200m2 and employs 180 people.

The Famot factory in Pleszew, Poland, has had a GBP 4 million investment in 2007 and is now the third largest facility in the Group.

It has an assembly area of 3,100m2 and employs 550 people.

* Universal CNC lathe - the CTX 310 ECO universal lathe to shown at MACH 2008 has 330mm swing with 200mm chucking diameter and 51mm bar capacity.

An 11kW spindle has a top speed of 5,000 rev/min and 112Nm of torque.

Direct measuring scales are linked to either Fanuc 810D control with ShopTurn or Fanuc Oi-TC Manual Guide i.

Digital drives with linear guideways produce rapid traverse rates of 30m/min in Z and 24m/min in X to the 12 station, 30 VDI turret that is available with the option of six driven tools and C-axis positioning .

* VMC - the DMC 635V ECO vertical machining centre, to be shown under power at the exhibition, is a rigid C-frame design with a working volume of 635mm by 510mm by 460mm.

It has 25m/min rapid traverse and direct measurement in each axis.

The spindle is 13kW delivering 83Nm of torque and 8,000 rev/min with a 1.6s tool change using a double gripper arm with the 20 tool magazine.

Control is by a Siemens 810D 30D-CNC and the fast programming ShopMill software with intuitive 3D operator guidance included.

* Universal lathes - the Gildemeister CTX Beta 1250 TC has a modular build concept which allows customers to specify various options to meet their precise machine tool requirements, such as specifying a 20 KW counter spindle in place of a tailstock to provide ?one-hit?, five-sided simultaneous machining in a single automated cycle.

Such has been the development on the highly successful CTX range, that in the latest Gildemeister guise, delivers up to 25% improvement in performance and with the ultra-modern design, providing a 40% improvement in visibility of the working zone, to provide a very practical addition.

An important feature of the latest DMG machines is the ERGOline control package with large 19in screen and 3D software for fast and easy programming.

The system features SOFTkeys giving customisable shortcut hotkeys for frequently used screen selections and operational sequences.

There is a choice of Siemens 840D powerline control with ShopTurn or Heidenhain?s PLUSiT with DINPlus.

Alternatively, Heidenhain?s TurnPlus is available as a further option.

The ?TC? version of the CTX Beta Universal turn-mill centre designates it has 22kW of power and 100Nm of torque available to its B-axis milling head.

The machine has added flexibility from a 24 position, HSK 63-A tool disc magazine that is ideally suited when additional tools are required for complex components.

Alternatively, sister tooling supply will enable continuous machining of components held in the 28kW main spindle.

The maximum turning diameter is 390mm by 1250mm machining length.

A tailstock is included and in standard specification, machine headstock options for bar sizes 65, 76 or 102mm bar diameters are available.

Optional chuck sizes up to 315mm on the 4,000 rev/min main spindle and up to 210mm on the counter spindle, which has a 6,000 rev/min maximum speed.

The vertical Y-axis travel of the B-axis milling spindle is +100mm and its maximum speed is 12,000 rev/min to accommodate smaller milling cutter and drilling requirements.

The B-axis has 2200 rotation to enable five-axis simultaneous machining and is driven by a torque motor with hydraulic clamping to ensure a rigid final positioning.

Linear measuring scales are incorporated for maximum accuracy and repeatability on all moving axes.
