Mill-turn centre machines 16 tonne components

For completely machining large components up to 16 tonnes, DMG has introduced a 44kW, 5-axis milling and turning centre, which requires no foundations.

DMG, Germany, has introduced a portal design milling and turning centre with a 5-axis simultaneous milling capability.

The Deckel Maho DMC 340 UFD 'Giga', universal mill-turn centre has a rotary pallet of 2.5m diameter and axis strokes of 2.8m in X, 3.4m in Y and 1.6m in Z.

The Giga's universal swivel milling head has 44kW spindle power and has been developed by DMG's Deckel Maho division to satisfy production demands for large components weighing up to 16 tonnes.

The DMC 340 UFD 'Giga' has a solid bed that eliminates any need for foundations or sub bases to support the portal design.

Working area is some 16m3.

In order to provide an integrated turning capability there is a direct drive to the pallet in the machining zone that will enable it to be rotated with a component at up to 120 rev/min.

* Universal swivelling head - the universal swivelling 44kW NC milling head with B-axis develops some 1,550Nm of torque through a torqueMASTER gearbox.

It provides power machining cycles for high metal removal and precise finishing cycles.

Different maximum spindle speeds can be specified at 6,300 rev/min, 10,000 rev/min or 12,000 rev/min.

High productivity is assured on large components, said DMG to manufacturingtalk, with a rapid traverse rate of 60m/min in the gantry carried X-axis, 30m/min in Y and 40m/min in Z.

The SK50/HSK-A100 swivelling milling head is supported by a 60 pocket tool magazine able to handle tools weighing up to 30kg as standard.

Options are for 120, 180 or 240 tool positions.

By incorporating up to four DMG pallet indexing positions and automation outside the confines of the machine, the 2.5m by 2m pallets - 2m diameter across cut corners - enable long periods of unmanned running to be achieved.

Up to five-faces of a component can be machined in the same cycle, said DMG.

Internal coolant supply at 40 bar and a chip conveyor is standard.

There is a choice of 3D path control system from Siemens 840D powerline CNC or Heidenhain's MillPlusiT specially developed for combined milling and turning applications.
