Mike Page, Editor, writes:
Vertical pick-up spindle turning machines have figured in my editorials before. Perhaps, like me, you had not realised the extent of the take-up of these machines by the German automotive industry component suppliers and OEMs.

The German Emag Group said earlier this month (October) that there are now some 3000 of them installed in Germany compared with just 230 in the UK. All told, Emag reckoned there were some 7000-8000 installed world-wide including 1500 in Japan. Of that total, German machine tool builders, such as Emag, Hessapp (Thyssen Krupp Group), Schaudt Mikrosa and Weisser, have shipped some 5000-5500 since 1993. Emag said it had shipped, and has on order, some 3000 of that total.

The 'straight' versions of these machines that is, doing what a standard CNC chucker can do replace standard CNC chuckers and front-loading, twin-spindle CNC chuckers. The obvious advantage of the pick-up spindle machine is that no extra automation equipment has to be added. In some cases, CNC gantry loaders, robotic systems, and so on, can equal or exceed the cost of the basic CNC chucker.

In Germany, Emag said that those 3000 pick-up spindle machines installed had replaced some 5000 CNC chuckers and cylindrical grinders. A standard variant of the pick-up spindle machine is a hard turning/cylindrical grinding system.

The fact that Emag, for example, can build a truly multi-function version of its pick-up spindle machines taking on board milling, drilling, boring, slotting you name it means that any work, which can be picked up in a chuck, can be machined in a vertical pick-up spindle turning centre. So if you have small or large batch production going through, say a CNC chucker, machining centre and CNC cylindrical grinder, it is time to consider whether all the operations can be done in one or two set-ups in a vertical pick-up
spindle multi-function machine.

So why are there only 230 installed in the UK? One was given the impression that there may be some 'fear' of them. Or the fact that a vertical pick-up spindle machine is more expensive machine for machine - than a standard CNC chucker (without automation). The 'automation' is already there in the vertical pick-up spindle machine.

In my opinion, the vertical pick-up spindle machine is the most exciting machine tool development since the US Milwaukee company exhibited its 'Milwaukee-Matic' machining centre in an Earls Court machine tool show during the mid-late 1960s (1967 or 68 I think).
If you do not have a vertical pick-up spindle machine in your automotive components production, you may be loosing out.

By the way. If the Hermle CNC machining centre working from bar is a new concept for you, bear in mind that Willemin-Macodel, in Switzerland, has been building bar-fed machining centres for some years. A number of Willemin machines are installed at UK factories.

1. Machining centre works on bar stock

A new concept machine for producing five-sided, complex or multi-featured components in a single operation directly out of barstock has been developed by Hermle and is now available in the UK from Traub Heckert (UK) of Brackley. The Hermle S100M machine, which uses short bar lengths up to 1100mm and between 15mm and 100mm diameter, has the capability to call upon up to 40 tools from its tool magazine and apply up to five-axes of movement to perform turning, milling, drilling, boring or tapping operations.
