Donation will fund a range of activities at the Wireless and Multimedia Communications and Signal Processing Group (WMCSPG), based in DMU's Faculty of Computing Sciences and Engineering

Cutting-edge research into the field of wireless communications at De Montfort University (DMU) Leicester has received a GBP200,000 boost The donation has been made by entrepreneur Professor Dr Majid Alsadi, Chairman of Eastern Investment Group Holding, which manages investments in the aviation, hospitality, security and training industries and is based in Jordan

It will fund a range of activities at the Wireless and Multimedia Communications and Signal Processing Group (WMCSPG), based in DMU's Faculty of Computing Sciences and Engineering.

The group carries out leading work into the field of wireless communications, particularly innovations in radio and infrared technologies, cellular telephony and personal communications systems.

This area of research is of global significance; the sector is rapidly changing and developing the technology to ensure it meets industry and consumer demand is vital.

Recent research projects carried out by the group have ranged from investigating ways of using mobile networks to perform essential health checks on elderly patients in their own homes to developing and evaluating software radio systems - software radio is expected to become an increasingly dominant technology in radio communications in the future.

Professor Dr Alsadi said: "De Montfort University is well known for its invaluable work in the field of wireless communications, and there are some very exciting projects taking place there".

"This area of research is fundamental to industry and I am very pleased to help support development of this leading edge technology".

Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, Head of DMU's School of Engineering and Technology who also leads the WMCSPG, said: "We are very pleased to receive this support, which will further strengthen our research efforts in this area".

"We work very closely with industry and this donation will also enable us to further develop these links".

The money will fund a number of activities over two years, including consultancy support, sponsorship for a post doctoral research post, financial support for two students studying with the group and investment in equipment.

Professor Dr Alsadi will be visiting the University on Tuesday 13 March to attend an event to mark the donation where he will meet with members of the group and other University staff.
