Fast prototyping website is in five
languages

Visitors to the revised DSM Somos web-site, now having content available in five languages, can view and download a wide variety of technical information and on-line demonstrations.

DSM Somos, innovation and material solutions leader for the rapid prototyping (RP) industry, announces the launch of its newly revised web-site with complete content available in five languages In line with the corporate DSM branding programme "Unlimited.DSM" launched in 2001, aimed at increasing its corporate profile beyond the company's traditional target groups, will allow industry professionals, engineers and industrial designers throughout Europe and the Americas to better understand the opportunities available for new product development through the use of value-added material technologies

Visitors to the web-site have the opportunity to view and download a wide variety of technical information and on-line demonstrations including: videos, product data sheets, stereolithography style files, case histories and Newsletters.

The web content offers the visitor a rare chance to move through real applications and to receive technical tips in response to specific questions related to materials and rapid prototyping solutions.

The web-site also features an entire area dedicated to WaterClear, the first stereolithography resin offering optical clarity and one of the latest DSM Somos innovations in rapid prototyping technology.

The end product represents an extensive information warehouse that incorporates over 11,000 hyperlinks, 1300 of which are external from the website, over 650 images and 2100 files.

Ty Bacon, newly appointed sales and marketing manager of DSM Somos(R), affirms: "An important challenge to those working in the RP industry is to provide a platform for sharing often extremely technical information with not only industry professionals that work directly with the technology, but also with the final end-users who are increasingly demanding a higher understanding of what these technologies can offer.

The end-user, be they engineers or industrial designers, have by nature varying demands and interests in the materials and technologies involved in rapid prototyping.

The new web-site has been developed to encompass varying degrees of technology awareness and to insure continued learning and feed-back from our direct and indirect customers." "The launch of our new web-site signifies an industry breakthrough and initiates DSM Somos(R) into an elite few who are focused on international B2B solutions.

Rapid prototyping is a relatively young industry that has been in continual development and change since its inception, and the accessibility of up-to-date information to non-English speakers has often been scarce at best.

One of the greatest principles that DSM Somos(R) adheres to is uniting know-how and information services from various world regions so as to promote a platform of experience that can be shared equally." Ty Bacon concludes.

Integrating improved user-access and user-friendly platforms, the new web-site features highly visual content, without sacrificing quick navigation and page downloads for eventual visitors using minimal capacity hardware or software computer stations.

Stereolithography is a layer additive rapid-prototyping process based on the use of photopolymer liquid resins which solidify when exposed to UV light.

A software program transfers the designer's 3-D CAD model into an electronic file for stereolithography machines ('STL' format), composing the information into thin cross sections or layers.

A laser beam then traces each layer onto the surface of a vat of photopolymer resin, building the part in repeated layers until a solid replica of the original CAD model is completed.

DSM Somos(R) (Delaware, USA), focused on innovative rapid prototyping materials, is a business unit of DSM Desotech, world leaders in the creation of UV curable materials.

DSM is a highly integrated group of companies with worldwide interests in life-science products, performance materials and chemicals.

DSM recorded sales of EUR 8.1 billion in 2000 and employs a total workforce of some 22,000, distributed in more than 200 operations throughout the world. Request a free brochure from DSM Somos ...
