Manufacturing companies are leading the way in the use computerised process control compared to other industry sectors, according to a UK international benchmarking study.

New UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) research reveals sector top of league in use of EDI and computer process control Manufacturing companies are leading the way in the use computerised process control compared to other industry sectors, according to the DTI's International Benchmarking Study 2004, published last month The study, produced independently by Booz Allen Hamilton for DTI's Achieving best practice in your business activity, shows that around 50% of manufacturing businesses in the UK use Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and computerised process control systems

E-Commerce Minister Mike O'Brien said: "We are delighted that so many businesses are exploiting this technology.

However although more businesses in the manufacturing sector are reaping some of the benefits, many are not taking advantage fully of information and communication technologies.

"Given the increasingly stringent environmental regulations and competitive business environment, companies risk being left behind their competitors.

We therefore urge them to act now and seek advice on how to take advantage of what technology has to offer." Michael Bond a DTI Best Practice champion said: "EDI is excellent for transferring transactional information, such as invoices and purchase orders.

Many companies find that moving to EDI prompts them to reassess the way they do things and may even lead them to purchase new software systems, such as Enterprise Resource Planning.

"ERP systems can act as a central 'brain' for your business processes, managing and maintaining links between every aspect of your business, from personnel to purchasing and production.

".
