UK's Manufacturing Advisory Service to grow
As part of the UK government's recent budget speech, the importance of MAS in giving manufacturers the assistance they need to improve productivity was highlighted and the service will grow.
It is an opportunity for engineers to comment on the proposed programme structure.
The aim is to help UK engineering remain competitive in an increasingly challenging international market, by ensuring research is appropriate to industrial needs.
The programme will: * Provide established and valued measurement services that underpin the UK measurement infrastructure.
* Develop new and improved measurement standards to support innovation and changing industrial requirements.
* Enhance international confidence in measurements made in the UK.
* Help spread guidelines for good measurement practice.
* Champion measurement as a route to improved productivity.
It covers measurements including mass, density, force, torque, hardness, pressure, length, angle, diameter, roundness, flatness, surface roughness, coordinate measurement machines, and a range of micro and nano measurements.
The new programme places particular emphasis on dynamic measurements.
Details of the programme can be found at www.npl.co.uk/engmeas where the engineering community is invited to put forward its views and get involved in delivering the proposed work.
The consultation period will end on Friday 6 May 2005, after which a panel of industrial experts will prioritise projects.
The final programme portfolio will be selected by the DTI.
