CNC bevelling head speeds wind tower
fabrication
Automated CNC bevelling head used on profiling machines produces a variety of weld edge preparations on different steel plate thicknesses used in the fabrication of wind turbine towers.
In the fabrication of wind turbine towers, steel plates of different thicknesses have to be joined This requires separate weld edge preparations, whilst the joint angle can vary from one side to another, or even continuously making the whole process both slow and difficult to carry out with the required levels of accuracy

'Entry level' CNC cutting machine introduced
ESAB Cutting Systems' brochure describes the Falcon low cost cutting machine that can be fitted with oxy-fuel gas cutting torches or can be supplied as an oxy-fuel package ready for plasma-arc work.
Laser cut plates/sheet need little finishing
Generally, the metal cutting edge achieved with Alpharex laser system needs no extensive finishing after cutting and profiling large sheet metal plate extremely accurately.
As a solution, ESAB Automation has introduced a fully automated CNC controlled bevelling head for use in conjunction with both its Numorex and Telerex cutting machines.
This CNC controlled endless rotating head allows the creation of any kind of bevel shape.
It contributes to high productivity rates, because the cutting machine does not have to be stopped at each change of bevel setting.
High accuracy cutting is also assured with CNC controlled setting of the bevel angle.
All bevel programming is easily achieved, making this sophisticated head very easy to use.
Lateral torch positioning and angle setting is also CNC controlled.
Linear potentiometer height control is provided with an air cooled sensor foot, for bevel cutting of V-, Y-, K- and X-joints.
This ensures highly accurate bevel height control of +/-0.3s for absolute cutting straightness.
The sensor air cooled foot has a long life cycle, whilst an air stream blown through the sensor foot ensures the removal of small slag particles and keeps the head at a constant height, resulting in less straightness variation.
The sensor foot can be pneumatically lifted for position rotation and is equipped with a drop-off safety device for plate ends or holes.
CNC angle setting of the side torches from 20s to 49s is achievable with lateral torch adjustment.
Automatic vertical height setting is standard.
Aside from wind turbine fabrication, many different industries can benefit from this solution and full details are available from Esab Automation Limited. Request a free brochure from ESAB Cutting Systems ...
