Manufacturers in the East benefit from initiative
The East of England Development Agency (EEDA) has launched the Manufacturing Framework document, which lays out aims to increase the profits of the region's 18,000 manufacturers.
A landmark plan has been launched to drive forward manufacturing in the East of England, and make the region's 18,000 manufacturing businesses even more profitable.
The Manufacturing Framework, which has just been published by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), covers the activities that should be put in place to support manufacturers over the period 2007 to 2012.
This will ensure that support goes into those areas of manufacturing that will have the most positive impact on the regional economy.
EEDA is now preparing an implementation plan to ensure that all of this can be put in place and the region's manufacturing really can be driven forward.
Mr Jody Chatterjee, head of enterprise at EEDA, said: "Manufacturing is the second largest contributor to regional wealth, and the East of England is home to more than 18,000 manufacturing businesses, employing more than a quarter of a million people.
What's more, the sector provides a huge 66 per cent of all regional exports, valued at around GBP12 billion, so manufacturing is vitally important to the region's economy.
"What is also clear though, is that manufacturing is no longer the just the traditional sector it once was.
It is evolving through new technology, specialisation, and investment into research and development (R and D).
Recognising the potential impact that these changes could have, we felt it was essential to develop a manufacturing framework and ensure that we have the provision to support and develop those businesses and individuals with potential." With the East of England being the only UK region to rank within the EU's top 10 R and D regions, this framework is essential to help one of its most thriving sectors.
The framework includes activities designed to support manufacturers from 2007 to 2012, presenting actions to ensure the region achieves its potential.
Among these are plans to attract and retain talented workers by strengthening links with schools and showing that manufacturing offers a broad range of careers.
Additionally, help will be provided to companies to gain success in global trade, due to the ever increasing overseas competition.
Neville Prior, Chief Executive of Cornelius, a leading manufacturing company in the region, said: "It is good to see that the importance of manufacturing, in all of its guises, is recognised by EEDA.
More importantly it is great to see that this recognition is being supported with real initiatives that will make a real difference.
I look forward to seeing manufacturing continue to be a major contributor to the region's economy, and enjoy the levels of growth that it needs and deserves.".
