Product Development 2006, the UK's largest design technology and engineering solutions exhibition, will be held at Birmingham's NEC Pavilion on 17 to 18 May.

The countdown to Product Development 2006 is well under way with many of the industry's leading lights signed-up to take part Below you will find a sneak preview of what will be on offer from some of the exhibitors at this year's event

Look out for more news on the conference programme next month.

3Dconnexion's full range of 3D motion controllers will be on show at stand 214, where visitors can take advantage of 3Dconnexion's upgrade programme saving £100 when they upgrade their existing 3Dconnexion motion controller to an intelligent SpacePilot.

It is a year since 3Dconnexion launched its intelligent SpacePilot controller.

The upgrade programme is designed to recognise the investment 3Dconnexion customers have made in the company's controllers and allow them to take advantage of next generation technology at a lower cost.

Good news for Autodesk Inventor and UGS NX users is that with the latest drivers the SpacePilot now automatically adapts to more than 21 environments within Inventor and 16 environments within NX.

The adaptive sensing technology also supports Pro/E, SolidWorks, Solid Edge and COSMOSDesignSTAR.

3Dconnexion has also announced UNIX/Linux support for SpacePilot.

A headline sponsor of the show, Adobe will have a major presence on the exhibition floor.

The recently launched Acrobat 3D will feature prominently as Adobe runs rolling demos and hourly training sessions of its dramatically expanded flagship review and collaboration platform.

Separate sessions on IP protection and real-time manufacturing collaboration will complete the Adobe picture.

Launched in January this year, Acrobat 3D is the culmination of Adobe's increasing recognition of the importance of PDF as a collaborative file format in the mechanical and architectural engineering communities.

The last few releases of Acrobat Professional have included features specifically designed for engineers and CAD professionals but with Acrobat 3D Adobe has stepped up a gear by introducing comprehensive view and mark-up capabilities that are not only compatible with all native CAD data but also available to anyone who has access to the free Adobe Reader.

Acrobat 3D combines this dramatic new functionality with all the workflow, collaboration and security features of Acrobat Professional.

Nottingham-based 2D CAD printing system supplier ArtSystems has been appointed the UK distributor for the Contex DESIGNmate 3D colour printer and will be will be on hand to demonstrate the product's innovative design and functionality.

The DESIGNmate's 24-bit colour capabilities and high resolution allows companies to produce high quality models in a matter of hours rather than the days it would take using conventional model making methods, at a fraction of the cost.

Just as 2D printers give designers a paper hard copy of their designs, 3D printers build physical models of real world objects, such as engine parts, buildings and landscapes.

CAD users are then able to communicate their concepts to customers, partners and suppliers more effectively.

Applications include concept models, presentation models, functional testing, finite element analysis, sales presentations and market research on style, colour and packaging options.

Meet the Autodesk team at stand 401 and preview the new Autodesk product releases: Autodesk Inventor 11.

This integrated package includes Autodesk Inventor, 3D design software, updated with AutoCAD Mechanical and Autodesk Vault.

It also claims to deliver a new groundbreaking modelling paradigm, Functional Design, which goes beyond geometric modelling and focuses on solving the problem.

AutoCAD Mechanical 2007.

AutoCAD Mechanical 2007 is a purpose-built 2D mechanical design application, which helps the user save time with design and re-work by automating common tasks.

Autodesk Data Management 2007.

The company's modular approach to data management comprises several powerful Autodesk products; Autodesk Productstream, Autodesk Vault and Autodesk Streamline.

For many years Konica Minolta has been using its expertise in optical electronics to produce new and exciting products for industrial markets.

In order to build upon its success in this field, the company recently announced a restructuring of its Instrument Systems Division, which has enabled it to concentrate on developing its target markets, particularly those related to its range of 3D products.

The new company Konica Minolta Sensing will be exhibiting its latest 3D laser scanner, the VI9i, at PD06 together with the latest versions of Rapidform XO 3D modelling and inspection software.

As rapid prototyping becomes an essential part of product development, greater demands are made on the equipment producing the parts.

Designers need to have models in their hands quickly with minimal effort.

Stratasys' systems claim to meet almost all of these requirements.

Using patented FDM (fused deposition modelling) technology, Stratasys systems build production and prototype parts from high-performance engineering thermoplastics: ABS, polycarbonate, PC-ABS, medical grade Class VI polycarbonate (PC-ISO) and polyphenylsulfone.

The mechanical properties of these materials allow the design team to produce models that can be assembled, tested and used as production parts.

Laser Lines is one of the leading suppliers of lasers and accessories, positioning equipment, rapid prototype machines and vacuum casting systems.

At Product Development 2006 the Laser Lines team will be on hand with advice and information about the full range of Stratasys' FDM products.

A Formula BMW racing car will be on display at the MAXON stand.

Using aspects of the car, MAXON will demonstrate how its CINEMA 4D software can be used by CAD, CAM and CAE users to create stunning pictures and animations.

This display will feature in MAXON's Engineering Bundle demonstrations.

Taking place in the Design Workshop on stand 801, MAXON guarantees the presentations will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

The presentations start at 10am and 1.40pm and will focus on creating high quality still images and state of the art animation respectively.

Accompanying the car at the show will be its talented young driver, Joe Osborne.

Now aged 17, Osborne won the British Championship 2004 Junior Inter TKM Karts before stepping up to Formula BMW last year.

Moldflow Corporation, the leading provider of design through manufacturing solutions for the plastics injection molding industry, recently announced the release of Moldflow Communicator 1.0, a new free software product that allows distributed product teams to visualise, quantify and compare Moldflow analysis results.

Unlike static 3D viewers, Moldflow Communicator allows users to understand the assumptions behind a given set of analysis results, which is vital to gaining the insight required to make critical design decisions.

For further information and a demonstration of Moldflow Communicator 1.0 please visit Moldflow on stand 822.

MSC Software Corporation, a leading provider of enterprise simulation solutions, will be demonstrating its newest solution, MD Nastran.

MD Nastran combines leading CAE platforms including MSC.Nastran, Marc, Dytran and LS-Dyna into one fully integrated multidiscipline solution for the enterprise.

It can reduce the time-to-solution up to 50 percent when compared with bundled single-point simulation tools because customers can now work with a single common data model in place of multiple models for uncoupled discipline analysis using multiple single point tools.

Higher result accuracy can be achieved by increasing commonality through the use of a single model representation for multidiscipline analysis.

MD Nastran is also designed to eliminate the silos of simulation technology that exist within today's enterprise environment, resulting in cost savings from the overall development investment.

PTC will be showcasing Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0, a major new release of its MCAD/CAM/CAE software and an integral component of PTC's Product Development System.

Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 claims to help users get their jobs done faster and easier, with best practices in mind.

Today's product development environment requires that engineers shorten time-to-market by compressing development cycles without compromising results.

To meet these challenges engineers are seeking solutions that enable them to increase their personal productivity and the efficiency of the processes they employ throughout the product development cycle.

Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 claims to focus on solving these specific challenges.

Strand7, an Australian developer of engineering analysis software, will be previewing the new application programming interface (API) for the upcoming release 2.4 of its Strand7 FEA software.

This release of the API expands Strand7's capabilities in the area of CAD connectivity making it easier for product designers to access the geometry import, export, healing and meshing capabilities of Strand7 from within their own software.

Previous releases of the API allowed structural analysts and third party software developers to incorporate Strand7 FEA technology into their own applications.

This was achieved at the FE mesh level, with the API providing a means to access the Strand7 model file, run solvers and extract results.

Now, for the first time, the API delivers CAD connectivity via the inclusion of geometry and meshing functions.

This allows the importing of CAD models (using industry standard formats such as STEP, IGES and SAT) and the direct creation of analysis models via automated meshing.
