Increased speeds, the adaptability to fill different pack formats and the flexibility to handle even awkwardly shaped products are among the advantages offered by a blister packer.

Increased speeds, the adaptability to fill different pack formats and the flexibility to handle even awkwardly shaped products are among the reasons why the EMF range from Electro-mec (Reading) continues to be the standard setter for the fast and accurate packing of tablets and capsules into blisters As a number of recent orders and applications demonstrate, the EMF is the choice of a wide variety of companies, including major players in the pharmaceutical industry and spanning the globe from Hong Kong to Puerto Rico

Abbott Laboratories selected an EMF feeder because its pioneering system of individual dosing tubes, placing single product into each blister form per cycle, assured them of the consistency, accuracy and gentle handling necessary to prevent the potential feeding difficulties caused by its products.

The tablets and capsules packed by the EMF at Abbott Laboratories include delicate soft gel products and a variety of unusual shapes such as triangular, round or pentagonal tablets.

In addition, because they are packed in cold form blisters, very careful product placement is required.

Another factor in Abbott Laboratories' decision to use the EMF3 was its adaptability to Abbott's existing filling lines.

Not only is the feeder compatible with the CAM M92 blister machine used by Abbott, but it is able to interface with Abbott's existing linear vibrator and pinhole splice detection equipment.

The speed of the EMF is another key benefit.

Electro-mec mounted an EMFIX Feeder Drive to Wasdell's Noack 760 blister machine, in a simple two-hour installation.

The result - replacing Wasdell's existing system where capsules were hand fed - has been an increase in the speed of the filling operation, from 25 to 40 blisters per minute.

Proof of the EMF's qualities comes from its continuing use by the major names in the pharmaceutical industry, to fill a variety of different products.

Brand leaders including AstraZeneca, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Aventis Pharma and Pharmacia have all recently taken additional change part tooling for their existing EMF models to increase the number of products and pack formats handled by the machines.

The EMF range is equally in demand in overseas markets, with current orders from PCI in Puerto Rico, MSD in South Africa and Bright Future in Hong Kong.

"The EMF is not one machine, but a family of feeders, each with its own characteristics," explained Ron Garwood, Electro-mec's Technical Sales director.

"Whatever the customer's individual requirements, there is an EMF feeder suitable for the job.".
