How to avoid hefty environmental legislation fines
The UK's environmental regulators has cautioned all businesses, however small, that if they fail to comply with essential environmental legislation they risk hefty fines.
The UK's environmental regulators have (May 13, 2004) cautioned all businesses, however small, that if they fail to comply with essential environmental legislation they risk hefty fines.
The warning comes as a free website - www.netregs.gov.uk It is estimated that smaller businesses generate about 60% of commercial waste and are responsible for as much as 80% of pollution incidents. Alarmingly, only 18% of 8,000 small UK businesses recently questioned could name any environmental legislation. Less than a third (31%) had heard of the Duty of Care Regulations, which apply to all UK businesses. Failing to comply with environmental legislation can lead to costly fines and directors of the worst offending companies can be prosecuted. Businesses also risk missing out on the growing commercial benefits of good green credentials. The NetRegs website, which that were launched on May 13 at simultaneous events in London, Edinburgh and Cardiff, contains clear guidance on the environmental regulations governing more than 100 industry sectors. NetRegs will also be launched in Belfast, with guidelines for more than 50 industry sectors available for the first time to businesses in Northern Ireland. In addition, NetRegs offers information on forthcoming legislation and good practice advice that can help businesses save money. "The UK's environmental regulators recognise that many smaller businesses are struggling to keep up with their environmental obligations, and want to give them the help they need to protect both the environment and their business," said Sir John Harman, Environment Agency Chairman. "This is why we have developed NetRegs for small businesses wanting user-friendly, authoritative information on the environmental legislation governing their activities." The launch of the completed NetRegs website, in development since 2002 by the Environment Agency, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Environment and Heritage Service, has been welcomed by trade bodies and business support organisations. Stephen Alambritis, Head of Parliamentary Affairs, the Federation of Small Businesses said, "NetRegs is a crucial resource for smaller businesses affected by increasing amounts of legislation."
