Laser marking system chosen for ease of
use

At EMO 2007, a gun manufacturer selected a laser marking machine because it was the easiest to use, is the most versatile, makes the best mark and has the longest warranty.

Impressed with the Electrox laser marking systems demonstrated at EMO 2007, owner of Weigt Praezisionstechnik, Thomas Weigt, placed his order whilst on the Electrox stand and arranged collection of the system directly from the show The order was placed with Haberstroh (Electrox's distributor in Germany)

Haberstroh undertook training on the Electrox the stand during the Saturday afternoon of EMO 2007.

The system was installed and operating on the following Monday.

Weigt Praezisionstechnik makes Irosa guns as well as offering design and precision manufacturing for prototyping.

Weigt chose the Electrox system to mark traceability and branding data onto the Irosa lightweight infrared training guns, in which the company is a market leader.

The guns operate without ammunition and are used for training children and young adults safely.

Although outside of the normal gun laws, the guns still have to comply with traceability requirements.

As a market leader, Weigt considers it to be very important that each gun component, made from aluminium and steel, is clearly branded.

* Electrox E-Box with Raptor II laser - the Electrox E-Box with Raptor II laser uses the proprietary Electrox EF Technology laser source.

Electrox told manufacturingtalk that Weigt had chosen this system, becuase in Weigt's words: "It is the easiest to use, is the most versatile, makes the best mark, has the longest lifetime and the longest warranty".

"It is exactly what I needed to mark our guns." The compact E-Box has a small footprint.

The 5U, 19in rack electronics enclosure is about the same size as a tower PC.

The air cooled system is easily installed and takes power from a single phase socket outlet.

Electrox told manufacturingtalk that he Raptor II is ideal for the Irosa's guns, which require the following.

* A high contrast mark, without surface damage.

* Easy serialisation combined with exceptional graphics capability.

* Ability to mark on a curved surface.

The system's very short energy pulses (25ns compared with anything from 70ns to 200ns in other systems) allow high peak powers (up to 0.4mJ), which permits the essential high contrast mark.

The highly controllable beam virtually eliminates surface damage around the mark, ensuring clear, attractive and permanent branding.

Near perfect beam quality and exceptional energy stability means smaller spots can be delivered via high speed galvanometers, typically a spot of 70 micron from a 254mm focal length.

The same high beam quality also facilitates large depths of focus, so marks are easily made on the guns' curved surfaces.

The high definition logo is easily achieved because the Raptor II's temporal pulse pattern gives clear and coherent bitmap images.

The Raptor II comes with a full two year warranty whilst the EF Technology laser source at the heart of the system has a four year warranty - the longest available on a laser source anywhere in the laser marking industry, said Electrox.

Raptor II system is controlled by the proprietary Electrox easy-to- use, intuitive software, which can be learned even by an inexperienced operator in only a few hours.

Electrox told manufacturingtalk that Weigt mastered it in less than an afternoon despite the surrounding distractions of a busy EMO.

Fully compatible with all current versions of Windows, the software can do the following.

* Import a wide range of graphics file formats.

* Generate bar codes, two dimensional codes and date codes.

* Perform automatic serialisation.

* Conduct merges with data from external sources.

* Control up to four axis of motion.

Changes to a design can be made in seconds.

Howard Moore, director/general manager of Electrox, said in a report to manufacturingtalk: "The sale of a system off the stand, and its collection, was typical of the reaction we received from prospective customers at EMO.

We had a very successful show, with more than treble the number of serious sales leads we received compared with the last EMO.

In part this is because the show itself was more buoyant, but more particularly it is because we are now able to offer a fully comprehensive range of practical, competitive, latest-technology laser marking systems all of which are available in an extensive range of different enclosure packages.

This means that we can usually suit a customers application perfectly from our standard range. Request a free brochure from Electrox ...

We also provide a fully design and manufacture service, ranging from minor modifications to a standard system to a fully bespoked system for those customers with unusual applications.".
