Control system lowers laser marking cost

An electronic control system for laser marking systems provides a significantly higher functional capability at a lower cost and ensures more manufacturing companies can afford product marking.

Electrox is to launch an electronic control system for its laser marking systems at the UK's MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition The proprietary Electrox electronic control system provides a significantly higher functional capability at a lower cost, and brings laser marking within the reach of even the smallest of manufacturing companies, said the company

This latest development from Electrox gives even smaller companies a competitive advantage, enabling them to compete on equal terms whilst complying with traceability and branding requirements and maintaining best practice within its manufacturing methods.

The new system, which has been developed in its entirety by Electrox engineers working at the company's Letchworth plant, has a substantially increased memory, a smaller footprint, and lower cost than previous laser marking systems, making it affordable to even the smallest of manufacturing units.

Electrox told manufacturingtalk.com that its engineers have achieved this by the innovative application of the latest and most efficient technologies, creating a lower cost system with higher powers and greater versatility all contained in a smaller unit.

The new compact 3U 19in rack mounted or free standing module occupies 40% less volume than the previous 5U design.

The new unit is based on a series of components employing an innovative multi processor design.

* Increased memory size - The module provides the massively increased memory size which enables multiple large files and fonts to be locally stored for use as and when required without the need for a back up battery in order to support the memory.

It also has a CAN based expansion bus for highly flexible and versatile capabilities, providing axes control beyond more usual X, Y, Z, and rotary motion options and thus extended even further the data which can be marked onto a surface.

The new proprietary Electrox digital galvo control has improved algorithms and even higher performance, giving an increased maximum pulse frequency capability from 100 to 500kHz.

The new Electrox electronics ensures a system is simple to install and virtually maintenance free.

* Easy integration into production systems - easily integrated into a production system, either as a stand alone unit or as part of a production line or cell, Electrox laser markers can have automatic or manual loading systems.

In addition, the laser markers have the advantage of the proprietary Electrox software which, as standard, creates unique identifier codes, 2D matrix codes and man- readable alpha numeric codes.

* Easy to use software - an easy-to-use, intuitive software, which can be learned even by an inexperienced operator in only a few hours, is fully compatible with all current versions of Windows.

It can perform the following.

* Import a wide range of graphics file formats.

* Generate bar codes, two dimensional codes and date codes.

* Perform automatic serialisation.

* Conduct merges with data from external sources.

* Control up to four axis of motion.

Changes to a design can be made in seconds, said Electrox.

Director/general manager of Electrox, Howard Moore, said: "Our new electronics system is a radical departure from the standard.

We are acutely aware of our customers' need for highly reliable, small and above all affordable laser marking systems.

We have a design and development department staffed by engineers capable of 'thinking outside the box' to generate the innovations which meet those needs, and the manufacturing department which can turn their designs into a workable reality".

He concluded: "With the new electronic control system, we have once again taken the technology a stage further to give our customers a clear competitive manufacturing advantage".
