Grinding crankshaft pins and bearings in
one

A cylindrical grinding machine built for machining passenger car engine crankshafts up to 500mm long, grinds pin bearings and main bearings in one set-up.

Naxos-Union revealed its PM 2 crankshaft grinder at EMO 2007 It grinds in one set-up, passenger car crankshafts - including pin bearings and main bearings - up to 500mm in length

"We are very much in business when it comes to the larger machines for the grinding of crankshafts," said Naxos-Union executive, Dr Jens Muckli.

"What we neglected to do till now is round down our machine programme." He told manufacturingtalk.com that that idea was now in the past.

He said that from a technological viewpoint the PM 2 is in every way the equal of its 'bigger sisters'.

The machine model code has 'P' for crankshaft 'pins' and 'M' for crankshaft 'mains' indicating that the PM 2 grinds pin bearings and main bearings in a single set-up.

The machine is designed to handle workpiece lengths of up to 500mm and weights of 30kg and targets the sector for passenger car and motorcycle engines (two-, three- and four-cylinders) and smaller units.

The machine in its basic form features the following.

* A grinding spindle headstock with a 30kW motor spindle.

* A direct driven work head.

* A linear motor for the X-axis.

* A sturdy tailstock and a back rest.

These features gives the PM 2 all the necessary features of a modern, efficient crankshaft grinder, said Naxos-Union.

The PM 2 is a 'hook-up-and-instal'l machine, with electrical cabinet and energy container located within the machine enclosure.

The machine can be readily integrated with an automated loading system and an external grinding dust extractor.

Head of the design department at Naxos-Union, Gerald Heller, commented: "We were absolutely determined to develop the PM 2 with all eyes firmly on an acceptable market price".

"It is the reason why it has become a completely new machine." The idea is that as many modules and machine components as possible should be the same as those in other grinders of similar size and with similar applications already produced by the Group.

So, Heller met his colleagues from Kopp and Karstens to work on a solution together.

Naxos-Union has combined the high-tech demands of the grinding technology with customers' demands for precision, high performance, reliability and simplicity of operation.

Rainer Lessmann of Technical Sales at Naxos-Union explained: "To succeed in transferring the characteristics of the larger machines to their 'little sister', without having to compromise, makes a major difference to the competition".

He said that a great deal had always been expected of Naxos-Union: excellent grinding results, short cycle times and a high degree of machine availability.

The enclosure of the compact little machine is 100% leak proof.

CBN wheels and 'pin chasing' - pin chasing will be just as much a standard operation on the PM 2 as the use of CBN grinding wheels.

There will also be no cutbacks regarding the in-process measuring of diameters during grinding and the integration of concentricity checks, where they are required.

The Naxos-Union software provides for a perfect grinding process - coupled with a high degree of process integrity.

The PM 2 also works with emulsion and oil as coolant.

Commenting on machine price, Heller said: "We have come up with a new definition of the modular system, both in-house and for the EMAG Group as a whole, by developing and/or modifying machine modules that can be used by our sister companies." For example, besides a multitude of other components, the machine base is also the same as the one used by Kopp and Karstens.

So the EMAG factory at Zerbst (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) can produce these machine bases in larger numbers, considerably reducing production costs.

Naxos-Union's sales personnel believe the market demand for a smaller machine to grind the smaller crankshafts will be high.

Lessmann said that the PM 2 will be equally attractive to OEMs and sub-contractors. Request a free brochure from Emag UK ...

Dr Muckli said: "Which is why we see in the PM 2 great prospects for growth and a considerable sales potential for our company.".
