Automation boosts injection moulding quality
The prime aim of the automation of injection moulding systems is not to save high labour costs but to ensure high process and product quality, says Engel.
In addition to a high-resolution colour flatscreen display, the basic machine now comes with Engel's proprietary quality data control and documentation software: The "Micrograph" graphics package, the "Microplast" suite for computing flow numbers as a direct indicator for a variation of the flow characteristics of a material compound, the "Elasttimer" heating time calculation program, and the "QDP Report" (Quality Documentation Package) for logging selected or all measured process parameters during manufacturing.
The standard equipment list of each Expert machine further includes an extra temperature control card, one melt temperature and one mould temperature indicator, and two additional mould heating circuits.
The control circuits each incorporate a separate heating power monitoring relay for triggering a plain text alarm message via the machine control system in the event of a heating cartridge failure.

An Engel VICTORY 200/120 injection moulding machine is at work in the production of ready-for-assembly film-decorated thin section housing parts for a cordless telephone.
Moreover, a new information module integrated into the control system provides help text for diagnostic and troubleshooting purposes.
Several mould data sets can now be stored in an additional CPU, and the on-screen display can be switched to a foreign language (German/English as standard, additional languages on request).
The Engel ELAST Expert series comprises both vertical and horizontal-type machines with clamping forces from 750 to 8,000kN.
The Expert machine exhibited on this year's "K" is a vertical version featuring large heater plates for its clamping force of 1,600kN, as well as a 550 x 650mm2 platen area.
Its short-nozzle, direct injection type FIFO (first in, first out) injection unit provides a shot volume of 750cm3 while delivering a maximum injection pressure of 2000 bar.
The two-cavity mould, served by a cold runner system, is used to produce bellows-type cable glands from an EPDM material in a fully automatic process that eliminates trimming.
The cycle time is 180 seconds.
