Established processes to remove oils from the large quantities of spent metalworking fluids generated each year by engineering workshops leave the hazardous, water-soluble components behind in the water phase Case Study 92 Cost-effective Treatment of Waste Oily Water describes the results of a three-year collaborative project to design, build and test a prototype system for the cost-effective, on-site treatment of oily wastewaters

The new system uses a novel synthetic carbon adsorbent and low temperature, in-situ carbon regeneration to polish wastewater that has been pre-treated to remove any free and emulsified oil.

The treated water can be recycled on-site or discharged to sewer.

The significant cost savings and environmental benefits of the new treatment system include reduced wastewater chemical oxygen demand (COD), reduced waste disposal costs, reduced water supply costs and compliance with environmental legislation.
