Leading manufacturer of ultra hard cutting tools, uses dressing-free, vitrified bond abrasive wheels to generate cutting edges in polycrystalline diamond blanks to produce cutting inserts.

Southampton, UK-based David Richards Engineering, leading manufacturer of ultra hard cutting tools, uses Engis abrasive wheels to give its wide range of specialist PCD tool inserts a real edge over the competition The company has been established over 15 years, supplies many thousands of metal-cutting tools each year to machine-tool manufacturers, distributors and end users in a wide variety of sectors, including automotive, medical, aerospace and press and mould tool manufacture

David Richards offers clients off-the shelf availability on a range of over 300 different items which are kept permanently in stock, so avoiding any costly delivery delays.

In addition to its standard range the company also creates bespoke tools, holders and work holding systems to suit customers' specific requirements, for example creating special boring bars to take inserts for use in CNC lathes for manufacturing automotive gear boxes.

Diamond is the hardest, most abrasive-resistant material known, but natural diamond is prone to fracture when subject to impact, which is why DR-PCD tools incorporate Polycrystalline Diamond blanks produced under ultra-high pressure (I million lb/in2 and ultra-high temperature (1700 deg C).

This process results in a material with the hardness, abrasive resistance and high thermal conductivity of diamond together with the toughness of hard metal - but those very qualities make it extremely difficult to grind to a sharp edge.

Which is why David Richards uses Engis vitrified bond abrasive wheels to grind the blanks to produce the cutting edge, as Director Richard Cox explains, "We have found the Engis wheels to be the most cost effective solution." Naturally, quality is vital for the company, which is approved to BS EN ISO 9001:2000, and to its many customers.

The vitrified bonded wheels offer very good abrasion resistance and form-holding capability, are dressing-free and easy to true, offering chemical stability with controllable stock removal rate and surface finish characteristics.

Furthermore, their porous structure can be controlled to provide chip pockets, allow ingress of coolant and prevent wheel loading.
