Laboratory extended to develop bore
geometries
A developer of superabrasive finishing systems and technical leader in bore finishing, Engis, has extended its UK development laboratory to provide technical support in developing bore geometries.
Engis (UK), part of Engis Corporation - developer of superabrasive finishing systems and technical leader in bore finishing - has extended its development laboratory in Henley on Thames The well equipped facility will provide a resource in the UK for manufacturers looking for technical support and expertise in developing bore geometries for applications in a wide variety of sectors including medical, pharmaceutical and automotive, using materials such as ceramics, steels, iron and aluminium

Bore geometries of between 2mm and 75mm diameter can be developed and tested at the UK location, for larger bores, up to 200mm diameter, work can be carried out at Engis laboratories in USA.
Equipment in the laboratory includes an Engis two-spindle horizontal bore-finishing machine and an Engis six-spindle vertical bore finishing machine with an eight-station rotary table.
These machines are supported by leading-edge metrology equipment which can measure the cylindricity, roundness and straightness of bores to an accuracy of 0.1 micron.
The laboratory, which is the brainchild of Engis UK managing director, John Wellings, demonstrates Engis' belief in the importance of manufacturers and suppliers working closely together to develop optimum solutions to manufacturing requirements.
Wellings comments, "With advances in both bore finishing technology and the materials being selected, an increasing number of manufacturers are looking to replace traditional honing techniques with bore finishing.
This is a production technique that Engis is well placed to understand as it undertakes extensive R and D activities in this field its own right and therefore has the skills, experience and equipment to assist its customers develop productive manufacturing solutions using the latest technology.".
