Diamond electro plated grinding points do not produce weld spatter type of contamination when deburring titanium components - even when run at above speeds recommended.

Engis said it is helping aerospace component manufacturers overcome some of the significant production challenges presented when deburring titanium components The characteristic toughness of titanium means it is difficult to machine and particularly to deburr, explained Engis to manufacturingtalk.com

When conventional bonded abrasive technology is used for deburring, not only are the grinding wheels damaged very quickly but a great deal of heat is generated.

The heat causes the titanium swarf to melt and then re-attach itself to the component in the same manner that weld spatter does.

In the aerospace sector such spatter, which is easily detectable to the eye and by touch, is completely unacceptable and can result in the scrapping of high-value components.

For example, an undercarriage leg could cost several tens of thousands of Pounds Sterling, so a cool grinding process is essential, said Engis.

Engis diamond electro plated grinding points provide just such a solution.

Engis technical specialist, Mark Foster, explained: "Recent tests at a major aerospace OEM demonstrated that the grinding points could not be made to create weld spatter, even when run faster and harder than the manufacturers recommendations - a very reassuring fact for production managers operating in real-world conditions".

Engis diamond electro plated grinding points and wheels are available in natural and synthetic diamond in diameters from 0.5mm to 550mm, and can be designed and manufactured to customers own specifications.
