Helical lapping improves geometry,
finish
Helical lapping can resolve imperfections in cylindrical geometry including the correction of tapered ID or OD, out of round conditions and bell-mouthed bores.
Engis is offering an extensive range of standard helical lapping products as well as bespoke helical lapping solutions Engis said that these tools have proved particularly successful in the aerospace and defence sectors, where they are used extensively for the manufacture of servo valves for aircraft controls

Helical laps can resolve imperfections in cylindrical geometry including the following.
* Correction of tapered ID or OD.
* Correction of out of round conditions.
* Correction of bell-mouthed bores.
* Correction of barrel-shaped bores.
* Improvement in straightness of ID or OD In addition to geometrical improvements, lapping can also provide improvement and refinement of surface finish quality and close tolerance accuracy at a much lower cost than other finishing methods, said Engis.
Engis helical lapping systems have achieved cylindrical geometries up to: 0.127 micron of roundness, 0.254 micron straightness and surface finish better than 0.025 micron Ra.
The laps can be used on any material from the most commonplace to the most exotic: for example, they have been used to lap composite ceramic beryllium copper for missile components.
Tools are available for both internal and external lapping.
The majority of internal laps are manufactured with radial grooves, however, for particular situations, for example when lapping interrupted bores, laps without radial grooves are available.
A full range of arbors and expanders is also available.
Engis offers a complete range of Hyprez slurries and lubricants developed for every precision lapping application.
As well as the standard range of oil, water-base, or emulsion carriers, Engis can also custom engineer a lapping slurry for customers' specific applications.
