These devices are becoming increasingly popular on the factory floor, as a simple and effective way to link multiple serial devices on an industrial network using conventional Ethernet topology.
Digi's EtherLite terminal servers have been designed to connect asynchronous serial ports to either 10 BASE-T or 100 BASE-T networks.
Because the EtherLite ports are real, local, serial devices, they are not slowed down by network overhead, which can be a problem with some terminal servers.
In effect, the serial information is "wrapped" and sent via Ethernet to the appropriate Windows or UNIX based machine.
The Ethernet ports appear as native comports under Windows NT or local TTY's under UNIX.
EtherLite serial port servers come with operating system drivers for SCO, UNIX, Windows NT, Linux and JAVA.
The automated configuration software is simple to install and configure by loading the device driver on the host and setting the IP address.
