As part of a GBP 1.3 million investment during 2003, leading rapid prototyping company, CA Models, has installed an EOSINT P 700 twin laser-sintering machine Due to be fully operational in March this year, it produces components directly from a CAD model by fusing successive layers of plastic powder

The machine was built by EOS, Germany, and supplied through UK subsidiary, EOS Electro Optical Systems, Warwick.

Clark Campbell, Managing Director of CA Models, explained, "The EOS machine is the first to be able to process Alumide, an aluminium-filled polyamide material offering high strength, heat resistance and good surface finish.

Its addition will offer further flexibility for our existing automotive and aerospace customers and we are excited about its introduction to the product design industry.

"With such material properties we also foresee batch manufacturing applications being sought after and are welcoming this as an attractive addition to our extensive stereolithograhy (SLA) and CNC precision machining departments.

Daimler Chrysler in Germany was one of the first companies to order a P 700 before the system was officially launched, and we are proud to be the first user in the world to laser-sinter Alumide on a machine of this large size.

As a direct result we have increased the headcount in our laser sintering department and expect to create a further eight new positions within the next 12 months." CA Models' intention is to dedicate its pre-existing laser sintering machine to investment casting work in PrimeCast and run the Alumide and polyamide materials PA 2200 and PA 3200 GF on the EOSINT P 700.

The process chamber is large enough to build parts up to 700 by 380 by 580 mm - another first for Stirling-based CA Models.
