Metal detectors keep check on crunchy
cereals

Jordan Cereals has purchased two Eriez Metalarm Handytec handheld metal detectors for use in its QA HACCP system, specifically as part of its CCP (critical control point) corrective action procedure.

Jordan Cereals has purchased two Eriez Metalarm Handytec handheld metal detectors for use in its QA HACCP system, specifically as part of its CCP (critical control point) corrective action procedure The first handheld metal detector was bought during the early part of this year and because of the success of its application was followed by a second unit a few months later

The Handytec handheld metal detector is a portable device designed to pinpoint the presence of small pieces of metal, either ferrous, nonferrous or stainless steel, in a wide range of shallow products.

In the case of Jordan Cereals they are able to pinpoint the location of very small contaminants (often below 2mm in size) which are embedded in their case fruit and which online detectors reject but cannot localise.

As soon as an online detector trips, the contaminated product is decanted onto a tray and screened on a bench top by passing the base of the Handytec handheld metal detector over the product.

A red LED light is illuminated and an audible alarm sounds the moment metal is detected.

The Eriez Handytec handheld metal detector was chosen in preference to standard screening methods, which typically would not result in detection of foreign bodies in this type of material (fruit) owing to lack of mass and strength of magnets employed.

A spokesperson for the company has indicated that the Eriez Handytec handheld metal detectors have been an invaluable aid in their CCP corrective action procedures, because they have reduced the amount of time taken screening rejects and have increased metal foreign body verification dramatically, with the knock-on effect of enabling them to pass such quality issues directly back to their supplier base.

Jordan Cereals has tested a variety of units on the market but has chosen the Handytec handheld metal detector from the Eriez Metalarm series because it is best in terms of reliability and performance. Request a free brochure from Eriez Magnetics Europe ...
