ES Technology offers laser marking service

An ES Technology product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Apr 10, 2009

To fulfil the requirements of companies that cannot justify the purchase of bespoke laser marking systems, ES Technology offers a subcontract laser marking service.

In 2008 ES increased its subcontract marking capacity with the addition of another laser, and now has a combination of seven different YAG and CO2 lasers operating full time.

Major contracts for this business segment from the medical and motor sport sectors has led to an increase in staff.

Other market segments covered by the company's subcontract marking service include automotive, aerospace, telecommunications and defence.

Lasers have increasingly become the preferred method for marking as they provide an accurate, repeatable and indelible result across a host of different materials and applications.

Many laser marking applications are two dimensional, with the techniques for presenting or indexing the labels through the laser marking system well established in the form of standard machines.

As laser marking finds its way in to new and more demanding application areas such as radial or circumferential marking, new techniques for product or part positioning have had to be developed to ensure the same high standards that are currently achieved on two dimensional applications.

As a bespoke system manufacturer and a subcontract marking job shop, ES Technology has acquired a combination of knowledge and skills enabling the company to develop solutions to complex laser marking applications such as circumferential marking.

On medical device components in particular, it is essential that any graduations marked on thumbwheels, control knobs or dials are accurate in their positioning and radial pitch.

The effects of moving the thumbwheel or dial by one or two graduations must achieve the desired result, whether that is an increase or decrease in dosing, pressure or positioning.

To ensure that these objectives are achieved on each and every part, ES Technology has developed a robust solution for the radial positioning of components on circumferential marking applications.

The use of zero-backlash planetary gearboxes to rotate and index components under the laser during marking ensures that all graduation marks are produced with an accuracy of +/-0.05mm.

By combining the repeatability and accuracy of this type of positioning system with a freely programmable control system, ES Technology can guarantee that all parts that it radially marks on behalf of customers are produced accurately and to high standards.

ES Technology will be participating at the Subcon 2009 exhibition that is being held at the NEC Birmingham from 9-11 June 2009.

ES Technology will be on stand number MEM3 and company representatives will be on hand to discuss all aspects of the company's laser marking capabilities.
