Esko and B+B International showcase latest pre-production solutions for packaging at Grafitalia 2006

Product highlights include new Scope 3 workflow software, CDI 4835 digital flexo imager and Kongsberg XE10, XL20 and i-XL44 tables Stand C15-D14 in Hall 15 Gent (Belgium), March 2006 - Esko, the market leader in packaging pre-production solutions and world leader in digital imaging of flexo plates, will present new innovations at Grafitalia, May 9th - 13th, 2006 in Milan, together with its distributor B+B International They will demonstrate pre-production solutions with the new Scope 3 integrated software suite, the CDI 4835 digital flexo imaging unit, and samplemaking solutions for converters with the Kongsberg XL20 and i-XL44 die-less cutting and creasing tables

They will demonstrate also the Kongsberg XE10, the newest and smallest member of the Kongsberg CAM table line, in a new application mode for production of varnish blankets Pre-production solutions with Scope 3 and CDI The new version of the modular Scope workflow solution will be a major news highlight at Grafitalia.

Scope 3 builds onto the industry standards that are a prerequisite for advanced commercial and packaging solutions: it is JDF 1.3-enabled, offers full support for Adobe PDF 1.6 and more offers direct links into the popular Adobe Creative Suite 2.0 (Mac and PC versions).

"Scope's modular design makes it the ideal workflow for brand owners, printers, packaging converters or tradeshops - anyone who needs to deliver consistent quality while reducing time-to-market and eliminating costs," says Goliardo Butti, Esko Sales and Country Manager Italy.

"Our Scope customers report that they have achieved total control on their production and reduced the time for make-ready".

"They are enthusiastic about the new enhancements in Scope 3." Scope's color management and screening technologies enable high quality results regardless of the printing technique used.

Demonstrations of Scope 3 will include the powerful color conversion tool ColorTone and Kaleidoscope for accurate color profiling.

"The biggest concern of printers is how to convert RGB to six or even more colors, better known as Multicolor Color Printing Process".

"Esko's ColorTone is the only system in the market which can guarantee a secure conversion from RGB to any press color space without any loss in data details, an extremely important feature in high quality printing," explains Butti".

""ColorTone will effectively monitor the dot gain, and with the combined precision of Kaleidoscope in color profiling, color printing becomes a predictable process with high quality results." To address the specific needs of the packaging markets, Esko developed InkWizard, integrating FMsix and Opaltone licenses, to create a special tool suite capable of converting any spot color used in packaging designs into the proper pre-set color combinations, such as FMsix.

Esko's vision considers pre-production to be a total process together with design, printing, finishing and delivering, thus integrating and linking with other systems upstream and downstream.

WebCenter is Scope's on-line platform for collaboration and approval workflows.

WebCenter 6.0 provides enhanced web-based collaboration and approval tools such as document version tracking, version compare tools and a feature-packed web viewer, enabling all supply chain partners to be integrated on a single communication platform.

Esko's line of Cyrel Digital Imagers (CDI) represents the world's leading solutions for digital imaging of flexo plates.

During Grafitalia, Esko will be demonstrating the CDI 4835, designed for middle-format highest quality flexo applications, including the flexible packaging and folding carton print markets.

The CDI 4835 supports fully variable resolutions from 2000 to 2540 ppi and is capable of screen rulings up to 200 lpi, with halftone imaging from 1-99% - suitable for high-quality packaging.

The CDI 4835's footprint is 1200mm x 900mm.

It uses the same external drum imaging design as all CDI imagers and can image a full size plate in 16 minutes at 2000 ppi.

Esko's CDIs are driven by Scope, which in version 3 has new screening technology to optimize highlight printing in flexography.

PerfectHighlights ensures that dots remain printable even with high relief depth and provides flexo tradeshops and corrugated converters with a visible way to differentiate their print quality from competitors.

Kongsberg tables deliver precision and versatility Distributed in Italy by B+B International, the Kongsberg tables offer a reliable and accurate solution for a variety of applications ranging from finishing of boxes and displays to cutting of blankets for varnishing.

During Grafitalia several models will be demonstrated.

The XL20 is a robust mid-sized table for cutting, creasing and milling.

The working area of 1680mm x 1270mm makes it well suited for short run of folding carton boxes.

The Kongsberg i-XL44 is a large format table that handles a maximum material size of 2280 x 3420mm for POP displays and short run production.

When equipped with a sheet feeder and a rolling conveyor, the i-XL44 automates production and ensures quick throughput.

Kongsberg tables are configured with ArtiosCAD, Esko's popular computer aided packaging design (CAD) software.

Version 7.0 of ArtiosCAD includes more import file formats for CAD solid models, as well as an expanded range of board characteristics now covering all packaging materials (corrugated, folding carton, plastics, foam...).

New 3D export formats for creating assembly drawings and presentations include animations and background images.

Two distributors of blankets for offset, Kruse and TexPrint in Hall 13 (stand B42-C41 and stand C47 respectively) - - will show the Kongsberg XE10 table for the production of varnish blankets.

This small-format table is equally suited for samplemaking of folding carton boxes and for sign, display, decal and other specialty print applications.

The working area of 80 x 110mm and the micrometric cutting precision makes the XE10 table ideal for the production of varnish blankets in offset printing.

Thanks to ArtiosCAD, the XE10 is able to automatic calculate the distortion rate of the blanket on cylinder, thus broadening applications to complex jobs with a variety of varnish effects, such as the production of luxury brochures or magazines, packaging and displays.

The Kongsberg XL20 can also be seen at work at the Converflex trade show, taking place in combination with Grafitalia, in Hall 22 (stand C41) on the Fustelservice booth - a supplier of punching and die-cutting systems - for a live demonstration of sample making for corrugated packaging boxes.

The XL20 offers a cost-saving solution for packaging design firms and brand owners who need to do a first sample for product approval and market testing prior to starting a full run of die-cutting.

The XL20, as well the XL22, can be equipped with a variety of tools for cutting and creasing.

The FlexhiHead, with integrated laser pointer and a measuring device to determine the thickness of the material, is ideal for corrugated packaging.
