Mould injection company chooses portable CMM

A FARO Technologies product story

A mould injection company has chosen a portable CMM over stationary CMM for the measurement their large, heavy moulds and saves US$7000 in first four months of use.

An injection moulding company was looking for a measurement system that would fit their measurement needs and be cost-effective.

They produce and inspect moulds ranging in size from 500 to 30,000 lb.

Taking these large, heavy moulds to a stationary CMM would be inefficient and quite costly.

Their engineers needed to decide what investment would best fit their company's measurement needs for portability, cost-effectiveness and ease of use.

They now use the Platinum FaroArm for their inspection and verification needs, including measuring features such as cylinders, circles, lines and planes.

QC personnel can check engineering changes to the mould by mounting the 7-Axis FaroArm on the mould, verifying the altered area and producing a scan.

They lay the scanned CAD file over the original design and determine if the correct changes have been made or if further adjustments are necessary.

This is especially important since the company's main goals are to reduce lead times, improve mould performance and help reduce their customers' costs.

Their measurements are very accurate - within 0.0005in - and enable them to generate SPC or GDandT inspection reports that they never had access to prior to using the Arm.

The company's FaroArm operator recently said, "We use it everyday".

They've greatly reduced inspection time and increased cost savings.

The company recorded nearly US$7,000 in savings in just the first four months of owning their FaroArm.

A typical mould used to take their engineers two hours to measure.

The same mould can now be measured in less than 15 min.

The company owner said: "The value on the amount of work the FaroArm has saved us is immeasurable.".
